Year 9 Science – Assessment Task 1

Research Task - Diseases

Due Date: Tuesday 5th March, 2024 Weighting: 25%

Outcomes Assessed:
• SC4-4WS: identifies questions and problems that can be tested or researched and makes
predictions based on scientific knowledge
• SC5-8WS: applies scientific understanding and critical thinking skills to suggest possible solutions
to identified problems
• SC5-9WS: presents science ideas and evidence for a particular purpose and to a specific
audience, using
• appropriate scientific language, conventions and representations.
• SC5-14LW: analyses interactions between components and processes within biological systems
• SC5-15LW explains how biological understanding has advanced through scientific discoveries,
technological developments and the needs of society

Context:
Students are required to conduct primary and secondary investigations and apply their scientific research
and inquiry skills to show their understanding of how disease affects the human body and how developed
scientific understanding has helped in reducing the effect of diseases.

Task Description:
This task will be divided into two parts:
Part A: Museum of Human Diseases Workbook (20 Marks)

Students visit the Museum of Human Diseases where they observe various preserved human samples of
non-infectious and infectious diseases. Students attend a seminar about human diseases and the history of
medical discoveries then conduct a research task covering the contents of the seminar. Students submit
their booklets by the end of their research session.

Part B: Research Task and Oral Presentation (30 marks)

Students create a 5-minute PowerPoint presentation covering their choice of infectious or non-infectious
disease (selected from the list in the Museum of Human Disease) and present it to their class.

The presentation should cover the following questions:

• Explain how the selected disease affects the human body?
• State the side effects experienced by the person suffering from the disease.
• Discuss treatment options available to eliminate the disease.
• Discuss current and future medical and scientific advances in the treatment and prevention of
the disease.
• State what significant problems have led to increased research and study into that area.

Students will record their presentations and submit a recording or a link for their presentation on Microsoft
Teams by 8:50 am on the 5th of March. Soft copies of their presentations have to be submitted by 8:50 am
on Tuesday 5th of March 2024.
This task will be out of 50 marks

You will be assessed on how well you:

• Use secondary sources to collect data
• Use critical thinking skills for problem solving
• Communicate understanding of scientific knowledge in a clear and concise manner
• Process and analysing data and information

Submission Instructions:
Students submit a PowerPoint presentation soft copy and a recorded video of their presentation online via
Microsoft Teams submission box by 8:50am, Tuesday 5thof March 2024.

Extenuating Circumstances:
Assessment task submission time is 8:50am. An extension to complete the assessment may be granted with
a dated and detailed Medical Certificate to legitimise the extenuating circumstance. This Medical Certificate
must be provided on the day of returning to school attached to an Illness, Misadventure and Special
Circumstances (IMASC) Application. Without a Medical Certificate, the assessment will be penalised with a
deduction of 20% each day (including weekends), unless an IMASC Application has been approved for other
circumstances.

Plagiarism:
AICS has a zero tolerance policy to plagiarism and students who are found to have plagiarised will receive a
zero for their assessment mark, as well as be required to resubmit the task.

Excursion to the Museum of Human Disease

Instructions:
Read each question carefully and use the information provided as well as specimens and posters in the
museum to answer the question in the booklet provided.
Bold and underlined text will explain how to complete the next section of your worksheet.
Each specimen has a number; you only need to refer to the numbers to the left of the decimal point.

The specimens will be in or near one of 25 different bays. Your instructions will tell you which bay to go to.
Look for the signs on top of the display cases. If you can’t find a specimen, ask staff or a volunteer.

IMPORTANT NOTICE
Real people have generously donated their bodies to our collection so that we can learn about health and
disease. Please display the utmost respect to these specimens.
