Language Policy/Planning official bodies are:

EDUCATION - disseminating knowledge at varied levels.


WORKPLACE - employees are expected to communicate in an honest, clear, efficient, client-
oriented, polite and professional way.
SCHOOL ADMINISTRATOR-language policy across the curriculum and oral language accross
the curriculum.

FOUR PHASES OF LANGUAGE PLANNING

SELECTION
refers to the choice of a language variety to fulfill certain functions in a given society.

CODIFICATION
is the creation of a linguistic standard or norm for a selected linguistic code. It is divided into
three stages.

THREE STAGES OF CODIFICATION


 Graphization, which is developing a writing system
 Grammaticalization, which is deciding on rules/norms of grammar
 Lexicalization, which is identifying the vocabulary

ELABORATION
refers to the terminology and stylistic development of a codified language to meet the
communicative demands of modern life and technology.

IMPLEMENTATION
promoting of decisions made in the stages of selection and codification which can include
marketing strategy, production of books, pamphlets, newspapers, and textbooks using the new
codified standard.

LANGUAGE POLICY CAN DO?


Language Policy influence the right to use and maintain languages, affect language status, and
determines which languages are nurtured.

IMPORTANCE OF LANGUAGE POLICY


Language policy have a major impact on language vitability and, ultimately, on the rights of the
individual.
