Lecture in Math 2: Adding Numbers Mentally

Mental addition means to do the addition of numbers in your head mentally without
using a pen paper or any machine.
Mental addition tricks help us to do addition faster and easily.
Here are some easy ways to do addition fast.

A. When adding a 1-digit number to a 2-digit or 3-digit number you can use the counting on
method.
If you want to add 35 and 4, you can picture a number line. Start from 35. Then count
by 1 from there 4 times. You will end up with the sum of 39.

35 + 4 = 39

B. When adding numbers, apply the order and grouping properties of addition and look for
combinations of addends that make 10.
1 + 9 = 10

1. 4 + 2 + 6 = ( 4 + 6 ) + 2 = 12 2 + 8 = 10

2. 1 + 9 + 7 = ( 1 + 9 ) + 7 = 17 3 + 7 = 10
4 + 6 = 10
3. 8 + 5 + 5 = ( 5 + 5 ) + 8 = 18
5 + 5 = 10
4. 3 + 4 + 7 = ( 3 + 7 ) + 4 = 14
6 + 4 = 10
7 + 3 = 10
8 + 2 = 10
9 + 1 = 10

C. When adding 10 to a number ( except 90 ), just add 1 to the digit in the tens place and
copy the rest of the digits.
a. 51 + 10 = 61 ( add 1 to 5 and copy 1)
b. 85 + 10 = 95 ( add 1 to 8 and copy 5)
c. 129 + 10 = 139 ( add 1 to 2 and copy the rest of the digits)
d. 345 + 10 = 355 ( add 1 to 4 and copy the rest of the digits)
D. To add two-digit numbers that both end with zero (0), just add the digits in the tens place
and copy 0.
a. 60 + 20 = 80 ( Add 6 and 2 = 8, copy 0 )
b. 30 + 40 = 70 ( Add 3 and 4 = 7, copy 0 )
c. 40 + 50 = 90 ( Add 4 and 5 = 9, copy 0 )
d. 20 + 30 = 50 ( Add 2 and 3 = 5, copy 0 )

E. When adding 100 to a number except 900, just add 1 to the digit in the hundreds place
and copy the rest of the digits.
a. 345 + 100 = 445 ( Just add 1 to 3, copy the digits 4 and 5 )
b. 216 + 100 = 316 ( Just add 1 to 2, copy the digits 1 and 6 )
c. 159 + 100 = 259 ( Just add 1 to 1, copy the digits 5 and 9 )
d. 623 + 100 = 723 ( Just add 1 to 6, copy the digits 2 and 3 )

F. To add any number ending in two zeros to a number, just add the digits in the hundreds
place and copy the last two
digits.
a. 167 + 400 = 567 ( Add 1 and 4=5; copy 67 )
b. 234 + 500 = 734 ( Add 2 and 5=7; copy 34 )
c. 411 + 200 = 611 ( Add 4 and 2=6; copy 11 )
