IEA Cities Task 2: Data for urban energy

planning
Introduction and overview
The IEA Cities technology collaboration programme (https://Cities-TCP.org) is a new collaborative
international cross-cutting initiative from the IEA family of technology programmes. It pools together
all relevant information, experts and stakeholders from the IEA Cities-related Technology
Collaboration Programmes and helps to vital input and support on the local level. The focus is on
cities in transition, and it offers tailor-made IEA expertise and advice. So, the Cities TCP aims to
accelerate the contribution that can be made to the energy transition making decarbonisation a top
priority of cities.

As one of the first initiatives of this newly founded TCP, the definition phase for the IEA Cities Task 2
“Data for Urban Energy Planning” is now starting. Task 2 will focus on urban energy planning and the
related objectives and tasks of this topic, its requirements on data, tools, methods etc. and how cities
and municipalities may make use of urban energy planning as essential tool to enable the necessary
transition and to guarantee a high quality of life. The clear intent of this task is to provide information
and advice for cities and communities on how to shape the urban energy transition by collecting and
analysing Best-Practice examples worldwide. Task 2 is jointly developed by AEE INTEC and
Salzburger Institut für Raumordnung und Wohnen (SIR).

As part of this preparation phase, we currently collect inputs from international experts on this topic
and aim to find further contributors for this task, which would like to help us achieve the objectives
of this task and bring in their expertise.

Proposed objectives IEA Cities Task 2

We propose the following objectives for the IEA Cities Task 2:

• Provide a comprehensive overview of energy-related data necessities and potential for urban
energy planning
• Foster an exchange of experiences, knowledge, best practices, and use-cases for data-driven
urban energy planning
• Facilitate discourse on legislation, regulatory, and socio-economic aspects of urban energy
planning
• Identify scientific, regulatory, and data gaps, as well as demands for implementation and
research
• Pinpoint potential future topics for the IEA Cities TCP
• Establish a knowledge hub/one-stop-shop on data for urban energy planning, benefiting
cities, municipalities, and other stakeholders
