SEMINAR PROPOSAL

A. Activity Title

HEALTHY BATO: Tamang Nutrisyon para sa mga Pasyente ng

Hemodialysis

B. Rationale

Dialysis is a form of treatment done to aid the kidneys when they are unable to
remove excess fluid and waste from the blood. Typically, this occurs when one’s kidney
function is reduced to 10 to 15% (National Kidney Foundation, 2024). Since dialysis is a
critical treatment for patients with kidney diseases, proper nutritional management is
important.

Several patients in East Avenue Medical Center are diagnosed with kidney
diseases which require them to undergo dialysis such as chronic glomerulonephritis,
acute kidney disease, chronic kidney disease, and end-stage renal disease. With this,
nutritional management of dialysing patients is essential since improved effectiveness
may be achieved depending on one’s food choices. Wastes can accumulate in the blood
in between dialysis sessions which may lead to illnesses, so managing one’s diet and
hydration can help in lessening this (National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and
Kidney Diseases, 2016). Hence, a nutrition education seminar is essential to inform the
patients of their condition and the nutritional management recommendations they may
follow especially for those with other comorbidities as well. Moreover, this program may
serve as a space for the patients and the caregivers to ask other inquiries and clarify their
concerns regarding dialysis.

C. Objectives

“HEALTHY BATO: Tamang Nutrisyon para sa mga Pasyente ng Hemodialysis”

aims to provide dialysis patients with knowledge and skills for effective nutritional
management to enhance their overall well-being and treatment outcomes. Specifically,
this seminar aims to:

1. Educate participants about the kidney and its function.

2. Provide clear explanations of dialysis procedures to ensure a thorough
understanding of the treatment they undergo and its importance in managing their
condition.
3. Educare participants on CRF diets, nutrient recommendations specific to dialysis
patients.

1
4. Empower participants in adopting lifestyle changes including weight
management, physical activity and other healthy habits.

D. Activity Description

Nutrition education is a set of activities designed to inform and adopt practical

and effective choices conduce to nutritional status, health, and well-being. “HEALTHY
BATO: Tamang Nutrisyon para sa mga Pasyente ng Hemodialysis” is a one-day nutrition
education seminar about the importance of dietary management on the nutritional status
of patients on dialysis. It will be conducted at the Dialysis Center of the East Avenue
Medical Center, Diliman, Quezon City. The activity will be in a lecture-discussion format
that will focus on the nutritional management of patients on dialysis relating to their
disease conditions and the role of dialysis. Nutrition education materials will also be
provided to guide the participants during the discussion, as well as to act as a take-home
guide of the seminar: anatomy and physiology of the kidney, disease conditions, role of
dialysis, and nutrition management.

E. Target Audience

The target audiences of this seminar are patients who are undergoing dialysis,
especially those under hemodialysis. In addition, the patients who are in East Avenue
Medical Center’s Dialysis Unit are also targeted to participate in the said seminar. The
family companions and caregivers of those patients under dialysis are also included in the
seminar so that they would also be aware of the appropriate nutritional management for
their patients.

F. Target Date and Time of Activity

The seminar is proposed to be implemented on April 2, 2024, Tuesday; from

10:00 to 12:00 AM at the EAMC Dialysis Center. This is to give way for the patients
who are undergoing dialysis to be rested while the seminar is ongoing.
