TOPIC: Multiplying Whole Number in a Fraction

Grade level: 5

Target Learning Competencies:By the end of the lesson the learners will be able to
multiply the whole number by a fraction

Prerequisite Knowledge and Skills:

1. Understanding of fractions
2. Multiplication of whole numbers
3. Multiplying a whole number by a fraction

Real-Life Situation/Problem-Solving Scenario:

Scenario: The Pizza Party

You are the head of the student council, responsible for organizing the annual end-of-
year pizza party at your school. This year, you've decided to make it extra special by
ensuring every student gets a generous portion of pizza.

Problem: Each student will receive

3/4 of a pizza. If there are 24 students attending, how many whole pizzas do you need
to order?

Presentation of the Problem:

You gather your team of student council members to plan the pizza party. You
explain the situation to them:

"Alright team, for this year's pizza party, we want to make sure everyone gets a fair
share of pizza. Each student will receive
3/4 of a pizza. We have 24 students attending. How many whole pizzas do we need to
order to make sure everyone gets enough?"

Generation of Solutions: The students will work in pairs or triads. Encourage the
students to think about the problem and share their thoughts with their classmates.
Assure them that there is no one right solution. They may do calculations or draw any
solution is welcome as long as they can explain why they did.

Watch Out: The students should realize that the given is a multiplying problem. Their
discussions with their partner or groupmates should revolve around figuring out how
many whole pizzas needed to order. Give guide questions to pairs or groups who may
have not realized this in giving guide questions to determine first what the students
know and then build on that.

Processing of Solutions: Have some pair or group write their solutions on the board
and explain

Possible solution:
(1) Using multiplication and division

(2) Using Butterfly Method

Guide the students to realize that the different solutions all lead to the same answer
which is 18- there are 18 whole pizzas are needed to order for 24 students who are
attending.
