Lesson 2- Day 2

Learning to Add with Expanded Form

Kjersti Clayton - May 31, 2018

1
Objective
• 90% of students will be able to solve 2 two-digit addition problems using their place value

strategy given to them in an exit ticket.

Time
60 minute total session broken up into 15 minute mini lesson and three 15 minute center
rotations.

Materials
• Base ten blocks
• Base ten mats
• Whiteboards (large and individual)
• IPads for each student or partners
• QR code reader app
• Number Pieces app
• Pencils
• Expo Markers
• 4 eight sided dice (enough for each student)
• Copies of worksheets (see appendix A)

Mini Lesson
Gather students in one area (preferably around a whiteboard). Remind them of the
strategy that they learned the day before. Give the students a problem to solve on their own
whiteboards. When finished have a student come up and explain how they solved the
problem. When finished have the students tell their partners how the volunteer student
solved his/her problem. Repeat with new problems and new volunteer students.

Center Rotations
After the mini lesson students will rotate between 3 different centers (15 minutes each).
Divide the students into 3 groups: low, medium, high. These groups may look different
depending on the results of the assessment given previously.

2
Center 1: CLIPS
Give students the CLIPS worksheet (see appendix A). Students will use the clips app to
create a video showing step by step how they solved 2 problems. Students need to use their
strategy and talk through the problem in their video. Students can show how they solve the
problem with the use of a whiteboard.
Center 2: Place value practice
Students will use 4 eight sided dice to create an addition problem. Students then will
use their choice of manipulative to solve the problem. They have the choice of place value
mat or the Number Pieces app. Students need to solve each problem using their new strategy
and then create a new problem when finished.
Center 3: Teacher
Students will be working with he teacher at this station. Each student will have a
whiteboard and expo marker. The teacher will give students a problem to solve. Students
need to use their strategy to solve. The teacher needs to help students work through the
problems and the parts that they are stuck on. If students finish early, they need to teach their
partner how they solved it.

Assessment
Students need to show that they can solve 2 out of 3 problems using their Expanded
Form strategy. This will help you make any changes to your groupings for centers, as well as
know if more time needs to be taken on teaching or if the class is ready to move on. (see
appendix B)

3
Appendix A
Using CLIPS create a video that explains how you solve each problem. Talk about how you solved the
problem and show your work using a strategy.
