Figure 1.1 autoSCAN -4 Diagnostics
When the autoSCAN-4 Diagnostics program is executed, the Diagnostics Password dialog box (Figure
2.1) will be displayed. The user must enter the autoSCAN-4 serial number, serial port the instrument is
connected to, and a valid password before the autoSCAN-4 Diagnostics Main Menu is displayed.
2.1 Password
The user must enter a pre-determined password. If the password field is left blank the program
will be in DEMO mode. The user will have access to all autoSCAN-4 Diagnostics screens but
the software will not communicate with the autoSCAN-4 Instrument. As the user enters a
password, asterisks (*) will be displayed to prevent others from learning the password. The
password is not case sensitive.
The Voltage/Gain Tab (Figure 3.1) allows the user to select and monitor various autoSCAN-4 Voltages.
3.1.4 Controls
3.1.4.3 DAC
The DAC gain is developed on the A/D Board for automatic gain control to keep all photo
diode current levels at approximately the same level. The allowable range is 0 to 255.
Table 3.9 displays DAC Output (TP11) voltages for selected Signal Inputs with a DAC
gain of 255. An error indicates a defective A/D board.

Board. Using a non metallic screwdriver adjust R26 on the 12-volt power supply for 12.3 volts +/- 0.05
volts.
OLD PCB: using a voltmeter, measure between TP1 (ground) and TP4 (12 volts) on the Power Controller
Board. Using a non metallic screwdriver adjust R25 on the 12-volt power supply for 12.3 volts +/- 0.05
volts.
NOTE: The Power Supply is located under the drawer on the left front side.
Step 2 is used to adjust R22 on the Power Controller Board for +5.00 (+/- .25) volts.
6.1.3 Step 3
Step 3 is used to adjust R20 on the Power Controller Board for +15.00 (+/- 1volt).
Step 4 is used to adjust R21 on the Power Controller Board for -15.00 (+/- 1 volt).
6.2.1 Step 1
Step 1 gives the user a place to check the diffuser and photo diode shields are clean and in place. Ensure
the frosted side of the diffuser plate is facing up.
6.2.2 Step 2
6.2.3 Step 3
Step 3; the user will adjust the higher (highlighted) of the first two filters (620nm or 560nm) in Step 2 to
1.100 (+/- 0.010) volts by adjusting R3 on the Photo Board.
6.3.1 Step 1
Step 1 is used to make the Preliminary Gain Adjustment by adjusting R4 on the A/D Board to 10.000 volts
(+/- 0.010 volts). The signal level that is being generated and DAC circuitry can be monitored at test point
11 on the A/D board.
Step 2 is used to make the Preliminary Offset Adjustment by adjusting R3 on the A/D Board to 0.000 volts
(+/- 0.002) volts. As in step 1, the signal can be monitored at test point 11 on the A/D Board.
6.3.3 Step 3
6.3.4 Step 4
Step 4 is used to make the Final Offset Adjustment by adjusting R36 on the A/D Board to an output that
reads between 9.995 and 10.000 volts. The signal level and tolerance out of the Log Amp is displayed on
the screen. The signal is present at test point 14 on the A/D board.
Step 5 is used to verify the Slope reading is between –9.900 and –10.400 volts. The signal level is located
at test point 14 on the A/D board. If the voltage is out of range press the Last Step button to move back to
Step 1 of the alignment procedure and readjust the voltages in each Step.
6.4.1 Step 1
Step 2; informs the user the autoSCAN-4 Instrument must be re-calibrated. Clean the shields and diffuser
and ensure they are in place with the diffuser’s frosted side up. Also ensure the drawer is empty. Select
Next Step to move to Step 2 and calibrate the instrument.
Has a date etched in the corner with Target Value, do not subtract 223. Target value is the number etched
in the comer of the panel.
Example: Offset Test Panel (Target Value 1022) = 1022 new Target Value.
6.4.3 Step 3
Step 3; the Offset Test Panel is being read by the autoSCAN-4 Instrument. All filters are read
during the offset test panel read. When the read is completed compare the Read Value to the
Target Value and if the value is within 20 counts of the Target value the alignment is complete.
Compare the Target Value with the Read Value, if the Read Value is within specifications, (+/- 20 counts
of the Target Value) the adjustment is complete. If the Read Value is out of range then adjust R3 and press
the Re-read Panel button to read the offset test panel again.
Note: Adjust R3 on the A/D board clockwise to decrease the Read Value number.
Adjust R3 on the A/D board counter clockwise to increase the Read Value number.
The PROM Checksum check box enables the user to select the PROM Checksum test. Once
selected pressing the Run button will execute the test. The results will be displayed in the Results
box. If the reader program (which controls the internal working functions of the instrument) has
been corrupted, the PROM checksum test should indicate this as a failed component. The CPU
board should be replaced.
The RAM Memory box allows the user to test the RAM Memory. All panel data gathered by the
CPU is temporarily stored in RAM before being sent to the computer. A RAM memory failure
requires replacing the CPU board assembly.
The Lamp box allows the user to test the color wheel lamp. By selecting Lamp the system will
give an indication of whether the lamp is operating or burned out. The color wheel should
advance to a designated location and the user should observe a color from the scanning indicator.
A failure in this test indicates a defective lamp.
The Drawer box when checked opens and closes the drawer three times. This function is used to
check the drawer open and close opto functionality and drawer movement. Failure of this test
could indicate a faulty or misalign open and/or closed drawer opto, or a bad motor or power
controller board.
