Learning Activities
A. Introduction
Panimula This lesson will provide you with understanding about the other practices
in pre- harvesting operation in rice production, one of these is the
Nutrient Management, a pre harvesting operation which should be well
taken care of. It is said that application of fertilizer has a significant effect
on rice yield and for maximum returns; fertilizer should be applied on the
right amount, place and time as needed by the crop.
KINDS OF FERTILIZER
1. ORGANIC FERTILIZER – It refers to the fertilizer that comes from
decayed plants and animals Such as animal manure, green
manure and compost.
2. INORGANIC FERTILIZER- these are commercial fertilizer. They are
concentrated form of plant food which maybe complete or
incomplete.
CLASSIFICATION OF INORGANIC FERTILIZER
A. SINGLE ELEMENT FERTILIZER- These contain only one element
Ex. Ammonium Sulphate (21-0-0), Urea (46-0-
0)
B. INCOMPLETE FERTILIZERS- These contains only two fertilizer
elements present.
Ex. Mono Ammonium Phosphate (21-53-0)(18-46-0)
C. COMPLETE FERTILIZER-These contain all three major elements,
N,P,K in percentages indicated respectively by the three
numerals. Ex. 12-12-12, 14-14-14
Common Fertilizer Grade in the Marker
50 kg sack
14 % Nitrogen 7 kg of Nitrogen
14 % Phosphorous 7 kg of Phosphorous
14 % Potassium 7 kg of Potassium

For 50 kg sack
16% Nitrogen 8 kg of Nitrogen
20% Phosphorous 10 kg of Phosphorous
0 % Potassium
For 50 kg sack
46 % Nitrogen 23 kg of
Nitrogen 0 % Phosphorous
0 % Potassium

To compute for the amount of nutrients present per 50 kg sacks of

fertilizer, multiply the fertilizer grade to the net content per sacks of
fertilizer.
Example. 50 kg sack of Ammonium Sulphate (21-0-0)

Water Management is another important pre harvesting operation that

should be taken into consideration in producing good quality rice. There are
three types of irrigation system.
1. RESERVOIR TYPE A- large dam or a small water impounding dam
is constructed across a stream of river where water is
impounded for irrigation and for domestic use.
2. THE RUN-OFF-THE RIVER TYPE. In this method a controllable gate is
constructed along the river or stream.
3. PUMPING TYPE- this method makes use of pump powered by
an engine installed to draw water from underground or open
sources like rivers and lake.
B. Development LEARNING TASK 1. MODIFIED TRUE OR FALSE
Pagpapaunlad Write TRUE if the statement is correct and FALSE if the statement is
wrong. Then change the underlined word or phrase that makes the
statement False then write the correct one.

1. The major nutrient elements needed by rice plant are

Nitrogen, Phosphorous and Potassium.
2. Fertilizer grade is the amount of nutrient element present in
a sack of fertilizer.
3. Pumping type method of irrigation is suitable for rice field in
low lying area.
4. Complete fertilizer is applied to rice crop during transplanting
period.
5. Throughout the period, an ample supply of water is needed
in rice production.

LEARNING TASK 2. COMPUTATION

Compute the amount of nutrient element present for 50 kilograms sack of
the given fertilizer. Write your answer on the table.

LEARNING TASK 4. COMIC STRIP.
Instructions: Create a comic strip on the topic which will choose below:
 The importance of irrigation system in the rice field.
 Best fertilizer to use in planting rice, Organic or Inorganic fertilizer?

LEARNING TASK 5. INTERVIEW

Instructions: Conduct an interview about the importance of nutrient
management and water management that are usually used by some
farmers in producing rice.
REMINDER:
For your safety, health protocols like social distancing and wearing mask
are highly encouraged while doing this activity.
Suggested questions to be asked during interview:
1. Based from your own experiences is it true that the kind of fertilizer
greatly affect the rice yield? Yes or No and Why?
2.For you what is the best fertilizer to use suitable in rice production?
2. When is the best time of applying fertilizer in order to attain good
production?
3. Do you use same kind of fertilizer in every stage of application?
4. How important is irrigation system in rice production? Will you please
share with us your opinion and experiences in this matter?
5. In this time of New normal, what message or advice can you give
especially with students who are striving hard to educate in this kind of field
in
agriculture?
C. Engagement LEARNING TASK 6. PERFORMANCE TASK

suited in your locality.
