Introduction:
In Grade 7 Science, you have learned the scientific ways of acquiring
knowledge and solving problems. How are problems solved? In most cases, scientists
solve problems by making thorough investigations. They follow a logical method of
solving problems called the scientific method. The scientific method is the simplest
and easiest way to solve a problem. This method minimizes the chances of making
mistakes.
Can you still remember your lesson about it? To find out, do the following
practice exercises to refresh your mind.

Activity 1. Arrange Me!

Directions: The following are the steps that are used to investigate a natural
occurrence. Orderly arrange the following steps of the scientific method by assigning
numbers from 1 (as the first) to 7 (as the last step). Use the separate answer sheet
provided for you.

_____Develop and follow procedure. Include a detailed materials list. The outcome
must be measurable (quantifiable).

_____Include a statement that accepts or rejects the hypothesis. Make

recommendations for further study and possible improvements to the
procedure.

_____Predict a possible answer to the problem or question.

_____Be prepared to present the project to an audience. Expect questions from the
audience.

_____Develop a question or problem that can be solved through experimentation.

_____Collect and Analyze Results: Modify the procedure if needed. Confirm the
results by retesting. Include tables, graphs, and photographs.

_____Make observations and research your topic of interest. Gather information and
data.

Activity 2. Let’s Make a Match!

Directions: Match each statement in the first column with its corresponding step
number in the Scientific Method. Write the correct answer in your answer sheet.

It is amazing to know that you can still remember the basic steps of the
scientific method. Good job!

Now, how knowledgeable are you about your surroundings? How far do you
know more about people, places, and things in this world? Share some ways and
techniques you know about becoming knowledgeable in a lot of things in this world
such as those in your world, among your friends, schoolmates, loved ones, and so
on.

What do you know about research as a method of understanding your

surroundings better?

Learn

What is research?
Several books on research define this term in
many ways, but such varied definitions boil down to
the primary meaning of this word, which is:

Research is defined as scientific investigation

of phenomena which includes collection, presentation,
analysis, and interpretation of facts that links man’s
speculation or assumption with reality (Calmorin,
2010).

The above meaning of research applies to all https://binged.it/3pgkMeA

fields of endeavor. Be it educational research,
sociological research, biological research, business research, information technology
research, fisheries research, agricultural research, and many others. In other words,
in research, there is a scientific study or scrutiny of event, trend, or incident which
includes the collection, presentation, analysis, and interpretation of phenomena that
bind/connect the investigator’s thought with reality. It is, therefore, to discover
truths by investigating your chosen topic scientifically; meaning, by going through a
systematic way of doing things wherein you are to begin from the simplest to the
most complex modes or patterns of thinking (Baraceros, 2016).

To learn more about research, the following will give you types of scientific
research based on the application of research method, classification of research, and
the type of data needed (Calmorin, 2010, Badke, 2012; Silverman, 2013; De Mey,
2013).

Types of Scientific Research

A. Based on Application of Research Methods
The types of research based on the application of research methods are (1)
basic research, (2) applied research and (3) development research.

1. Basic Research

This is also called “pure research” or “fundamental research.” It aims to

discover basic truths or principles. It is intended to add to the body of scientific
knowledge by exploring the unknown to extend the boundaries of knowledge as well
as to discover new facts and learn more accurately the characteristics of known
without any particular utility (Calmorin, 2010).

Q1_STE_Research_I_ Module 2_Types of Scientific Research Page 5 of 25

Illustration

“TAXONOMY OF HERBAL PLANTS IN NORTHERN ILOILO”

The foregoing research problem is basic because the main purpose is to

discover and classify new species of herbal plants and their characteristics found in
Northern Iloilo without any particular thought to immediate practical usefulness.

2. Applied Research

This type of research involves seeking new

applications of scientific knowledge to the solution of
a problem such as the development of a new system
or procedure, new device, or new method to solve the
problem. In this type of research, the problem is
identified, and a new system or new method is https://binged.it/2NgON0a
applied to solve a problem.

Illustration
“UTILIZATION OF SEAWEEDS INTO SIOPAO:
ITS ACCEPTABILITY, SALABILITY AND PROBITABILITY”

The above applied research problem seeks to develop a new method to utilize
seaweed into a value-added product, siopao. Thus, solves the food problem and
economic crisis of the country.

3. Development Research

This is also decision-oriented research involving the application of the

scientific method in response to an immediate need to improve existing
practices. This process involves practitioners who study and from such an
experience draws their decision and actions as well as evaluation.

Illustration

“CULTURE OF RED ALGAE (Kappaphycus) IN BULOBADYANG ISLAND,

ESTANCIA, ILOILO, USING HANGING AND LANTAY METHODS”

The aforementioned development research responds to an immediate need to

improve the existing hanging method of culturing seaweed, red algae (Kappaphycus),
in Bulobadyang Island Estancia, Iloilo, to lantay method. The researcher compares
which of the methods hanging or lantay, of culturing seaweed a higher yield and
higher return of investments (ROI).

Q1_STE_Research_I_ Module 2_Types of Scientific Research Page 6 of 25

B. Based on Classification of Research
The types of research based on classification of research are (1) library
research, (2) field research, and (3) laboratory research.

1. Library Research

This is done in the library where answers to specific questions or problems of

the study are available and much of the primary and secondary sources are found
in the library.

Field and laboratory research also make use of the library researches but the
answers to certain problems are not available in the library. The data is gathered
through a survey or experimentation.

2. Field Research

Research is conducted in a natural setting. No changes are made in the

environment.

Illustration I

‘TAXONOMY OF HERBAL PLANTS IN NORTHERN ILOILO”

Taxonomy of useful seaweeds found in Northern Iloilo is an example of a field

research. The seaweeds are collected in its natural setting.

Illustration 2

“CULTURE OF RED ALGAE (Kappaphycus) IN BULOBADYANG

ISLAND, ESTANCIA, ILOILO, USING HANGING AND LANTAY
METHODS”

The foregoing study is field research because it is conducted in a natural

habitat, marine water of seaweed, red algae (Kappaphycus), and two groups are
involved, broadcasting and lantay method.

3. Laboratory Research

This research is conducted in artificial or controlled conditions by isolating

the study in a thoroughly specified and operationalized area. The purpose is to: (1)
test hypothesis derived from theory; (2) control variance under research conditions;
and (3) discover the relations between the dependent and independent variables.

Illustration

“CULTURE OF MUDCRAB (Scylla serrata) IN THE FISHPOND USING

PELLETS, BREAD MEAL AND FISH MEAL AS SUPPLEMETAL FEEDS”

The above study is an example of laboratory research because

mudcrabs are cultured in controlled conditions in the fishpond.

C. Based on the Types of Data Needed
As a curious student, you want to know many things about your surroundings
as well as the people, places, and things you find interesting, intriguing, mysterious,
or unique. Try looking at the people around you. Perhaps you are interested in
knowing these people’s ideas, views, feelings, attitudes, or lifestyles. The information
these people give you reflects their mental, spiritual, emotional, or social upbringing,
which in turn, shows how they view the world. The kind of data you want to work on
reflects whether you wish to do qualitative or quantitative research (Baraceros,
2016).

Qualitative research requires non-numerical data,

which means that the research uses descriptive words
rather than numbers to express the results, the inquiry,
or investigation about people’s thoughts, beliefs, feelings,
views, and lifestyles regarding the object of the study.
Those opinionated answers from people are not
measurable, so, verbal language is the right way to
express your findings in qualitative research.

https://binged.it/3q4Gljj

Meanwhile, quantitative research involves the

measurement of data. Thus, it presents research
findings referring to the number or frequency of
something in numerical forms (i.e., using percentages,
fractions, numbers).

Qualitative usually happens in soft sciences like

humanities, social sciences, education, and psychology
while quantitative research happens in hard sciences
such as physics, chemistry, biology, and medicine.
https://binged.it/3q4Gljj

The data you deal with in research are either primary or secondary data. When
a material provides first-hand information then, it is considered primary data. It is
obtained through direct observation or contact with people, objects, relics, artifacts,
paintings, etc. Primary data are new and original information resulting from your
sensory experience or eyewitnesses’ accounts. On the other hand, secondary data
are second-hand information like when a person narrates information heard from
the original source or data has already been written about or reported on and are
available for reading purposes.
