For the learner:
The hand is one of the most symbolized part of the human body. It is often used
to depict skill, action, and purpose. Through our hands we may learn, create, and
accomplish. Hence, the hand in this learning resource signifies that you as a
learner is capable and empowered to successfully achieve the relevant
competencies and skills at your own pace and time. Your academic success lies
in your own hands!
This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful opportunities
for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You will be
enabled to process the contents of the learning resource while being an active
learner.
iii
At the end of this module you will also find:
1. Use the module with care. Do not put unnecessary mark/s on any part of
the module. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises.
2. Read the instruction carefully before doing each task.
3. Observe honesty and integrity in doing the tasks and checking your
answers.
4. Finish the task at hand before proceeding to the next.
5. Return this module to your teacher/facilitator once you are through with
it.
If you encounter any difficulty in answering the tasks in this module, do not
hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator. Always bear in mind that you
are not alone.
We hope that through this material, you will experience meaningful learning
and gain deep understanding of the relevant competencies. You can do it!

Introduction:
In Grade 7 Science, you have learned the scientific ways of acquiring
knowledge and solving problems. How are problems solved? In most cases, scientists
solve problems by making thorough investigations. They follow a logical method of
solving problems called the scientific method. The scientific method is the simplest
and easiest way to solve a problem. This method minimizes the chances of making
mistakes.
Can you still remember your lesson about it? To find out, do the following
practice exercises to refresh your mind.
Directions: The following are the steps that are used to investigate a natural
occurrence. Orderly arrange the following steps of the scientific method by assigning
numbers from 1 (as the first) to 7 (as the last step). Use the separate answer sheet
provided for you.
_____Develop and follow procedure. Include a detailed materials list. The outcome
must be measurable (quantifiable).
_____Be prepared to present the project to an audience. Expect questions from the
audience.
_____Collect and Analyze Results: Modify the procedure if needed. Confirm the
results by retesting. Include tables, graphs, and photographs.
_____Make observations and research your topic of interest. Gather information and
data.
Directions: Match each statement in the first column with its corresponding step
number in the Scientific Method. Write the correct answer in your answer sheet.
It is amazing to know that you can still remember the basic steps of the
scientific method. Good job!
Now, how knowledgeable are you about your surroundings? How far do you
know more about people, places, and things in this world? Share some ways and
techniques you know about becoming knowledgeable in a lot of things in this world
such as those in your world, among your friends, schoolmates, loved ones, and so
on.
1. define research;
2. classify the different types of research on a set of criteria; and
3. compare and contrast types of research.
Do you know that research is fun? Try to work on these activities and
experience the enjoyment that research could bring you.
Activity 3

Directions: Study the different scenic places below and answer the guide questions
that follow. Use the separate answer sheet provided for you.

What is research?
Several books on research define this term in
many ways, but such varied definitions boil down to
the primary meaning of this word, which is:
To learn more about research, the following will give you types of scientific
research based on the application of research method, classification of research, and
the type of data needed (Calmorin, 2010, Badke, 2012; Silverman, 2013; De Mey,
2013).
1. Basic Research
2. Applied Research
Illustration
“UTILIZATION OF SEAWEEDS INTO SIOPAO:
ITS ACCEPTABILITY, SALABILITY AND PROBITABILITY”
The above applied research problem seeks to develop a new method to utilize
seaweed into a value-added product, siopao. Thus, solves the food problem and
economic crisis of the country.
3. Development Research

1. Library Research
Field and laboratory research also make use of the library researches but the
answers to certain problems are not available in the library. The data is gathered
through a survey or experimentation.

The data you deal with in research are either primary or secondary data. When
a material provides first-hand information then, it is considered primary data. It is
obtained through direct observation or contact with people, objects, relics, artifacts,
paintings, etc. Primary data are new and original information resulting from your
sensory experience or eyewitnesses’ accounts. On the other hand, secondary data
are second-hand information like when a person narrates information heard from
the original source or data has already been written about or reported on and are
available for reading purposes.
Research Terms
Directions: Use the crossword to become familiar with some of the research
terms. Simply read the clue. Even if you know just a few of the terms, you will
discover more as you fill in letters in the crossword puzzle. Write the correct
word on the answer sheet provided for you.
Down Across
Directions: Classify the following topics by writing B for basic research, A for applied
research, and D for development research in your answer sheet.
Having obtained much knowledge about the lesson, you can now compare
qualitative and quantitative research. Put a check mark (/) if the research question
is qualitative or quantitative research. Then, accomplish the last column to justify
your choice. Write your answer on the answer sheet provided for you.
Congratulations! You are almost done with this module. Let us summarize
what you have learned from the lesson and activities.
A. Directions: Complete the concept map by supplying it with the appropriate
information. Use the answer sheet provided for you.
