is the Potol Bridge? Sounds ironic right?
Potol is a small barangay of Infanta, Pan-
gasinan which is just a bridge away from
Guisguis, Santa Cruz.
Originally a hanging footbridge, it was
constructed in 1994 during the time of
President Fidel V. Ramos. Its inaugura-
tion was even attended by the Repre-
sentatives of the two provinces, House
Speaker Jose de Venecia and Congress-
man Antonio M. Diaz.
Ironic it may seem, Potol Bridge, which
aim to connect the people, now literally
disconnects especially the students to
study in Guisguis National High School.
This bridge, in fact pic-
tures resilience. This frail and
worn-out bridge has suffered
so much from the devastations
of Typhoon Cosme which really
wrecked the wooden floors of the
bridge. It was totally destroyed
that it was not passable at all.
The community worked to-
gether to restore the wooden

t has always been my favorite part
of the year. Everything seems so
perfect and so happy. Loud music

love Christmas Season.
I recalled, it was also Christmas time
when my dad suddenly has to run and
leave his turn to sing his favorite song
because a part of the sky suddenly
turned orange while ash seems to fall
like a snow from the sky.
Dad called out his workers to rescue
every plant they can save. Without
minding their looks, they readied them-
selves to put out a huge forest fire.

many trees including the plantation site

I asked myself, where will we be without
my father?
I smiled as I reminisce that scene. My
father might not be the kindest and best
man in the world but for me, he is. I saw
how he takes good care of his family and
people. Every Christmas, he would gather
his workers including their families and
he will throw a party for them. He talks to
each one of them and warmly welcomes
them just like a family.
As I grew up, I witness how much peo-
ple adore my father. How they all became
loyal and respectful to him. I saw how he
managed his work as a forester and pro-
tector of the forest, a wonderful brother to
his workers and the responsible and loving
father to us.

He has flaws. He is quite strict and
tends to be overprotective, but he is
still a very warm person. He seems to
be everyone’s Santa Claus who neither
have white beard nor sleigh. Yet, he is
kind and loves to give out gifts.
Looking back, I realized my dad is
such a great man who works hard.
Thinking of all his sacrifices, they all
linger in my heart and soul. I am thankful
and so happy that like Santa Claus,
my father always makes our Christmas
perfect.

school. Thus going to school and home
every day is truly an impossible feat.

NE OF THE ADVOCACY of K to 12 is

literate. According to Libraries and Society
(2011), “Functional literacy involves the skills needed
to cope at an adult level in everyday situations.”
Guisguis National High School is proud to share
that the Grade 11 and Grade 12 Carpentry class are
now fully-geared with craft mastery and prepared to
take on the challenge of life.
Carrying the flag of their great craftsmanship,
is James Movilla Jr. who championed the Cabinet
Making Category during the TESDA Regional Skills
Competition in May. He will be representing Zam-
bales again to the forthcoming Zonal Skills Competi-
tion (National Level for TESDA) on November.

Juggling their loneliness away from the comfort
of their parents and studying these young girls
proved to have carried with grace the heavy bur-

Order when he took his position.
The cancellation of the permits of these companies
in February 8, 2017 is truly a cherry on top moment
for all the advocates. This proved that their time and
effort were not totally wasted.
Consequently, his blunt and fearless expressions
of his advocacy in social media also led to various
reactions; some share support, some show concern,
yet many still complain and question his point of
views while others simply do not care.

RADITIONALLY, FILIPINOS don’t
wear their shoes and slippers inside their
homes. Way back, it is a common custom
to see the lined-up footwear on doorsteps of
houses - but not in this era.
When we enter the office of the Municipal
Disaster Risk Reduction Management (MDRRM),
our staff was amazed to see the shoes neatly lined
up. Reviving this custom in his office, the leader
already exemplifies the virtue of discipline.
The man behind the emergence of the numer-
ous signage around the town of Santa Cruz, in
cognizance with the strict implementations of the
list of executive orders, municipal resolutions and
ordinances is Mark Gil Misola - who believes that
“If you want to be original, go back to the basics”.
Not only his name sounded celebrity but his
looks too. This young and very passionate man
is the newest Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction
Management Officer. An alumnus of Arel-
lano University School of Law, he prides on his
campaign to spread awareness, safety and proper
implementations of the municipal resolutions and
ordinances in Santa Cruz.
He initiated the issuance of flyers; posting of
signage of the implementation of ordinances like
the no smoking policy, cleanliness, road clearings;
and ticketing of violation to better implement
these laws as part of the MDRRM’s responsibility
as a support group. He believes that this step will
not only help people be aware but also a way to
maintain the implementation.
“Kasi ang kailangan naman talaga natin ay disi-
plina. Kahit anong gawin na implement ng mga
yan (ordinances and resolutions) kung ang tao
walang disiplina, wala talaga mangyayari”.
When asked if Santa Cruz could become a
better and safer place during inspections, he
answered, “Actually kaya natin maging 100%
maayos, malinis ngayon. Ang question dyan is ano
bukas? Ganoon pa din ba? Ang mahirap talaga ay

during the most intense moments between the
people and the police force.
She was jailed for the reasons even the PNP
initially cannot explain. Ironically, she was even
filed with a case, Violation of Mining Act of 1995 at
Iba, Zambales.
“Kung ako lang, sa sarili ko lang, kahit hindi na
eh, matanda na ako, bukas makalawa mamatay na
ako… Hindi ko ginagawa ito para sa akin… para
sa matatanda, mga bata, sa mga hindi nila kaya
yung sarili nila na iligatas ang sarili nila pagdating
sakuna…” her emotional reply when asked about
her reasons for her advocacy.
She was truly sad that the fight to save the
environment dramatically dwindled, especially
those who are true natives of Bayto and Santa Cruz.
When the barricades were suppressed, people
began to forget. It’s as if nobody remembers it at all.
What made her even sadder is when people
ridicule her for being jailed and for fighting for their
right to have a comfortable life.
She remembered how she met her beacon of
hope, the late Former Secretary Gina Lopez whom
she tearfully described as the “light at the end of
the tunnel”. For Serrano, the Writ of Kalikasan was
Lopez’ gift to the people.

The suspension of classes according to him was
his hardest responsibility. He explained to the staff
on how he would stay up all night till dawn just to
check on the weather updates; contrary to the fre-
quent mocking posts on social media by netizens.
He shared that the protocol includes providing the
updates and recommendations about the situation
and the decision on suspension will be given the
Mayor.
“Safety and Security that is our number one vi-
sion” Misola fervently shared. “Ang aksidente lag-
ing nakaabang, ang sa akin (sa amin), kung hindi
man namin sila maprevent, at least ma-mitigate,
nandyan kami.”
His commitment to his advocacy on safety and
awareness earned him both praise and derision.
He bravely and positively battles the criticisms,
cyberbullying and crab mentality every day. He
considers it as challenge for him to better serve
his hometown which he believes has many more
potentials in store.
He left his work in the city as Administrative Of-
ficer in D.M. Consunji. Inc and started serving his
town since July. He also credits his decision to his
uncle, Victor Misola, Education Program Supervi-
sor, Music and Arts who also once set aside the city
life to give back to his hometown.
He believes that it was destiny that put him in
MDDRM, and that there is a reason why he was
put there. Although he once reached the point of
giving up due to the harsh criticisms, he is still
optimistic and vows to do everything he can to
help his town quoting his line “sa ibang lugar,
nakakapagsilbi ako. Sana makapagsilbi din ako ng
bayan ko”.
This is really the moment that the trending
phrase ‘sana all’ is most appropriate, may the pas-
sion to serve of Sir Mark influence us all and may
his visions soar towards a safe and secure Santa
Cruz.

Despite the persuasion of her husband and the
scornfulness of some, she strongly expressed that
she will never stop her advocacy. “May paraan pa
na pwede pang gawin para maituloy, like social
media…”. She believed that through social media
she can spread awareness.
To the youth of this generation, she hopes that
they can leave a legacy too that they can be proud
of. Her message for everyone is: “Huwag silang
matakot na ipaglaban ang karapatan nila kasi
para sa kinabuksan nila yan. Aanhin ang pinag-
aralan kung ang bayang sinilangan ay mawawash-
out? Kaya dapat kung may magagawa, gawin na
ngayon bago mahuli ang lahat.”

HRIVING IN THE PEAKS of Mapita and
Aguilar are some 50,000 bamboos which
serve as climate change mitigation and ad-
aptation response and drivers of economic
growth.
Bamboo Plantation Development Project (BPDP)
is part of the Enhanced National Greening Program
(e-NGP) of the Department of Environment and
Natural Resources.
Bulaylay Planter Association Inc (BPAI), a local
Peoples’ Organization (PO) in Guinabon, Santa Cruz
was granted the largest project with 2.4 – 3.5 million
budget. They are tasked to a three-year reforestation
project to plant bamboos in 250 hectares that started
in August 29, 2017 (planting).
Director Henry A. Adornado of the DENR’s Eco-
systems Research and Development Bureau (ERDB)
stated that bamboo has high adaptability in any kind
of soil and any climatic condition and high economic
value. Bamboo ply, tiles and beams can be produced
and even shoots for food. It has a high carbon-ab-
sorption capacity, four times greater than trees.
“Bamboos does only answer to the call of re-
forestation but also provides a livelihood for the
farmers here in Babuyan and Guinabon”, Johnny
Bayao, Chairman of Bulaylay Planter Association Inc.

e-NGP and DENR since 2014. For five years, they

While their permit is still suspended, this program
also serves as an alternative to sustain the jobs of the
employees and support the program’s expenses.
Through this project, ERAMEN Minerals Inc,
hopes to reach out and inform the community of
their fine deeds; and that, they are sincere in their

Known for its proven medicinal benefits, these
berries make Guisguisians one step away from any
diseases. Mulberries, Bugnay and Aratiles are the
three famous accessible berries in the community.
The fruit of the mulberry (Morus sp.), “bungang
ig’es” (grub fruit) according to locals resembles a
caterpillar in the size of the little finger. A fruit of
mulberry contains 210 more berries that is clustered
like grapes.

Several medicinal properties of the bitter
gourd have been studied by various researchers,
such as anti-diabetic, anti-ulcerogenic and also as
anti-helminthic.
The group came up with the idea of testing the
seeds of bitter gourd as an alternative anti-hel-
minthic supplement for chickens. According to
their research, helminthic infection is one of the
health problems that affect humans and livestock
in the world. The helminths, which infect the

Bamboo cuttings were collected and sown to seed-
ling pots.The process of caring for the seedlings last
for six months until all the propagules have hardened
properly.

The seedlings are all transported to the peaks or
planning sites. Strip brushing and ring weeding, af-
terwards, area will then be measured to ensure the 7x
7 meter spacing, then organic fertilizers are applied
to ensure fast growth of the propagules.

To prevent forest fire, before summer or after the
plantation, construction of fire line for about 10-15
meters wide is necessary.

To guarantee the safety of the plants, a look out
tower is also constructed, and foot patrolling is

VII Newton. She is currently part of the athletic team
who will compete in Provincial Meet on October
23-25.
It was a dream come true for her. Her ticket to
Provincial Meet at Grade VII is truly remarkable.
Overcoming her opponents from both Candelaria and
Masinloc, she still found other ways to continuously
improve her skills to reach her goal.
The staff of GNHS school paper, on their quest to
look for feature articles met her on the foot of Potol
Bridge. She was holding a rope on her back while
pulling an old but big truck wheel.
“Katatapos lang po kasi naming magbilad ng
palay,wala po akong ginagawa kaya naghanap po ako
ng gulong tapos yung lubid hiningi ko sa kapitbahay
po at nagpasama po ako sa mga kapatid ko ,mas ma-

GUISGUIS NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL’S
futsal team tasted their first real gold after defeat-
ing Candelaria District team in a faceoff bout, 2-1
during the Zonal Meet in Dampay, Candelaria,
September 26.
‘’Isa sa nakita kong pagkakaiba nila sa kala-
ban nila ay yung disiplina, talagang sa bawat
training na ginagawa nila sinasabi ko sa kanila na
dapat may disipilina sila dahil isa ito sa mga daan
sa tagumpay,” Glenn Alfonso, coach of GNHS Futsal
Team.
Last year, both the futsal and football team se-
cured a free ticket to Zonal Meet winning by default.
This year, they were able to display the result of their
trainings.
Daisy Ibarbia recorded five great goals and Jen-
nifer Mazo with two goals.
GNHS immediately showed off on the onset of the
game through Ibarbia’s series of attacks. She paved
the way to clinch 5-1 which immediately put Can-
delaria District’s defenses aside. Mazo also helped
by scoring a goal in the first five minutes of the first
half of the second game as Candelaria struggled to
recover with a strong kick by Ashlee Nicole Abrera,
sealing all one score.
Before the minute ends, GNHS had strengthened
their defense in the second half of the game and did
not let their opponents score again as Ibarbia ended
their game, 2-1.

gold in triple jumps category and silver in long jump
during the Zonal Meet held at Dampay, Candelaria,
September 26, earning her ticket to the Provincial

“Iyan si Jenny , una pa lang nakitaan ko na yan
ng galing sa pagtalon kaya nga nung grade 7 kinuha
ko siya tapos kung icompare natin dati , mas nag-
