MAY 2012

SUBJECT: PROGRAMME ELECTIVE-III

ADVANCED MECHANISMS AND DESIGN (MME-567)

Time: 3 Hours. MAX.MARKS: 50

Instructions to Candidates:
 Answer ANY FIVE FULL questions.
 Additional data required may be appropriately assumed
 Assumptions made must be clearly mentioned

1) Explain the significance of auxiliary point method. For the mechanism in

Fig. Q1, BCD is a rigid triangle of sides 3, 4, 5 units and all other links
2, 3, 5, 6, 7 are of length 3 units. The frame O 2O7 is 5 units long. If
ω2=1 rad/s and ω7=2 rad/s (both counterclockwise) find ω5 by the
auxiliary point method and show the velocity diagram for the
mechanism. Also show all auxiliary points. (10)

2A) What is the significance of Cognate linkages ? (02)

2B) Determine the mobility of RGGR mechanism. For a RGGR mechanism

ABCD, link 2(AB=100 mm) rotates in the XY plane and link 4 (CD =
450 mm) is constrained to rotate in the YZ plane. Link 3 (BC=400 mm).
Offset of point D with respect to A is (300, -200) in the XZ plane.
Determine θ4 by analytical method when θ2 = - 45o . (08)

3A) What is a transformation matrix ? Show as how the position

coordinates of link ‘n’ are related to the position coordinates of link ‘1’
in an ‘n’ link single loop mechanism. What is the product of
transformation matrices around a kinematic loop. (03)

3B) For a 12 cylinder 60o Vee engine explain as how the resultant inertia
force varies (only in direction) as the crank rotates. (03)

3C) Write a short note on the following

i) Coupler curve synthesis
ii) Static force analysis with friction (04)

4A) In a four bar mechanism having all turning pairs (quadric cycle chain),
link 1(AD=220 mm) is fixed. Link 2 (AB=150 mm) is rotating in
counterclockwise direction at 95 rpm. Coupler (link 3) has a dimension
of BC=200 mm and dimension of link 4 is CD=180 mm. slider crank
mechanism, crank length is 50 mm and is rotating at 200 rpm. Length
of the coupler / connecting rod is 190 mm. Determine the angular
velocity of link 3 and link 4 when the crank makes 60o with the fixed
link 1. (06)

4B) The relation between the input and output link is given by y=x2, where
1 ≤ x ≤ 2. To synthesise a four bar mechanism, three precision points
are used. For the input link 30o is the starting position and 90o is the
total swing. For the output link, 60o is the starting position and 120o is
the total swing. Determine the three precision points. (04)

5) Explain with derivation as how the balancing of a four bar crank rocker
mechanism is carried out. Clearly interpret the results. (10)

6A) Explain Type, Number and Dimensional synthesis. (03)

6B) Derive the Freudenstein’s equation for a four bar mechanism having
all turning pairs. (07)
