Trust and fear drive much of the story in Orphans of the Tide. Several important events only occur
because characters are fearful (for example of the Enemy) or mistrusting (of other people they think
might be the Enemy). The following questions are about fear and mistrust – as well as their
opposites: bravery and trust.

does Ellie do to get Seth to listen to her when she is trying to save him (Ch. 2)?
2 The motto on the base of the statue is ‘And it shall claim even the innocent’ and it leads to much of
the fear and mistrust that people in the City feel (Ch. 4).
a Why do you think both a giant squid and the Enemy are discussed?
b Which seems more frightening from Castion’s description, the Enemy or the squid?
c How does that affect your feelings about Seth’s safety in the story?
4 Anna tries to convince Ellie to join her at the orphanage (Ch. 7).
a When does the sea react to Seth? What happens to Seth to make him affect the water?
b What lesson about panicking can you learn from Seth’s interaction with the water?
b What happens immediately after in Chapter 14 that tells you he does not trust her completely?

by pretending to send her on an important assignment.
