1. Show that for diffusion in gases, the diffusivities of species A and B, DAB and DBA are equal. [5]
2. Determine the diffusivity of CO2 in SO2 at 57°C and 3.3 atm. [6]
3. In a combustion chamber, oxygen diffuses through air to the carbon surface where it reacts to make
CO and/or CO2. The mole fraction of oxygen at z = δ is 0.21. The reaction at the surface may be
assumed to be instantaneous. No reaction occurs in the gas film. A schematic is shown in Figure 1.

Figure 1
The temperature of the system is 25℃ and total system pressure is 1 atm. The diffusivity of oxygen in
the gas mixture under these conditions is 1.86 × 10-8 m2/s and the gas film thickness, δ, is 2 cm.
Determine the rate of oxygen diffusion per hour through one square meter of area if:
i. only carbon monoxide, CO, is produced at the carbon surface. [9]

1. Compute the rate of heat transfer per m 2 through the walls of a refrigeration room having inside
and outside temperatures of 255.4 K and 297.1 K respectively. The inside and outside convective
heat transfer coefficients are 10 and 25 W/m 2·K, respectively. The walls of the room are made up
of 0.0127 m wood on the inside and 0.1016 m cork board and 0.0762 m concrete on the outside.
The thermal conductivities of the wall materials are:

k𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑐𝑟𝑒𝑡𝑒 = 0.762 𝑊/𝑚 ∙ 𝐾

k𝑐𝑜𝑟𝑘 𝑏𝑜𝑎𝑟𝑑 = 0.0433 𝑊/𝑚 ∙ 𝐾

k𝑤𝑜𝑜𝑑 = 0.151 𝑊/𝑚 ∙ 𝐾

Also find the temperature at the interface between the wood and the cork board and the temperature
of the innermost surface. [15]
