Assignment IV

1. The concentration of a sulphur at 2 mm into the surface of titanium slab is 0.5 kg/m3
and 4 mm the concentration is 0.68 kg/m3. The temperature of environment is 1000 K,
and the rate at which sulphur is entering into this 2 mm thick region is 1.2710-9 kg/m2
s. Evaluate the diffusion coefficient for this particular treatment.

2. The length, diameter and surface temperature of steam pipe line is 30m, 0.1m and
120oC respectively. The ambient temperature is at 30oC and associated convection
coefficient is 10 W/m2. Determine the annual energy loss due to convection and
radiation from the gas fired furnace. Assume emissivity to be 0.8.

3. A certain amount of ammonia diffuses into a room only through a cylindrical vent of
12 cm diameter and 30 cm length. Neglecting advection what is the rate of ammonia
loss in mole/s through the vent if the room concentration of ammonia is 0.05%.
Assume binary diffusivity coefficient as 0.1 cm2/s at a constant temperature of 28oC.

4. Consider the heat flux for a one-dimensional reacting flow:

Express the right-hand side of the heat flux expression in terms of the temperature and
appropriate mass fluxes. Using this result show that simplifies to

subject to assumption that a single binary diffusivity ,characterizes the mixture.

5. Prove that the simplified thermodynamics employed in the flame theory for the simple
reaction,
1 kg fuel + kg oxidiser ( ) kg products.
For perfect adiabatic conditions show that,

where Tu and Tb are unburnt and burnt temperatures respectively.
