What is Nuclear Energy?

Nuclear energy is the form of energy which is created from the nucleus of
an atom. It comes from when an atom’s nucleus is split apart through a
process called Nuclear Fission.
How is Nuclear Energy Generated

Nuclear power is generated through forcing the core of a uranium atom to

split — called nuclear fission — thus triggering a chain reaction that splits
more atoms. The process produces a lot of heat, which is used to convert
water to steam that, in turn, drives a turbine which produces electricity.
Usage of Nuclear Energy in the Caribbean

Jamaica is the only country in the Caribbean that uses Nuclear energy.
Jamaica has had a working power plant which is used for research
purposes. Different nuclear techniques used by Jamaica are helping
address issues in: food and agriculture, energy planning, water and the
environment.
Pros and Cons of Nuclear Energy in the Caribbean

Pros
● One of the most low-carbon energy sources.
● It also has one of the smallest carbon footprint
● It's essential to our response to climate change and greenhouse gas
emissions.
● Reliable and cost-effective.
Cons
● Nuclear radiation
● Nuclear power plant accidents/risk of detrimental accidents.
● Radioactive waste
● Impact on the surrounding environment
