Speed and Velocity:

What is speed and velocity? Are they the same? Sometimes they are used interchangeably.
To clarify their usage let us first define them.
Speed- refers to how fast an object moves. It can be defined as distance travelled divided by the time
of travel.
Velocity- refers to speed with direction. Average velocity can be obtained by dividing the total
displacement incurred by the object divided by the total time elapsed.
Formula of speed:
Speed= distance travelled ÷ time of travel
Application of speed and velocity:
Speed is use to determine how fast an object moves. It is important to know usually the speed
of a certain object for the purpose of knowing its danger and the hazard that could be brought by
over-speeding. For example vehicles have speed limits especially in accident prone areas. Speed
limits are usually indicated in the traffic signs to prohibit accidents and traffic problems. While velocity
is speed with indicated direction. Velocity is very important in describing the path of typhoons that
may come along during land fall. Velocity is usually use in weather bulletin indicating the strength of
the typhoon and its path of direction.

TRUE OR FALSE:
Write TRUE if the statement is correct and write FALSE if it tells wrong ideas.
1. Speed and velocity can be used interchangeably. TRUE
2. It is important to know the speed of the car to conform to the speed limits of the traffic sign. TRUE
3. In determining the speed of the object, it can be computed by determining the distance travelled by
the object divided by its time of travel. TRUE
4. Velocity can be used in determining the strength of the typhoon and the direction of its path. TRUE
5. Speed and velocity are the same. FALSE

Fill in the blank:
