Grade 8 Storage Solution Criteria A1

Task A1 | The Purpose of the project

🔎 What you need to do: ❗Why you need to do this:

Explain and justify the need for a solution to a problem for a specified You need to fully understand the ‘problem’ and identify where you can make a
client/target audience. meaningful contribution towards solving this.

1 page maximum

⚙ How?
Develop an ‘insight statement’. ‘Design thinking’ starts with a designer observing a problem of a user or organization. What is the specific situation or problem
for the user that allows you an opportunity to Design?
Present your ‘design opportunity’ using a photo.

Shared Storage In My House

Next to our main door we have a small shelf with drawers beneath it. This place usually holds small things that don’t really have a
place like the AC remote and automatic perfume sprayers. In the drawers below we keep things like cards, keys, masks etc. The
drawers sometimes cause a problem because small things may become hard to find especially when you’re in a hurry. So the
drawers mainly look very clustered.

In my bedroom my closet has a shelf portion as shown in the picture. Some of the shelfs are very disorganized and it becomes hard
to find things especially if big boxes are in the front and the thing you need is in the back. Some of the cubbies are also dependent
on other things to hold their place so when you remove an object it’s likely that the rest of the things in the cubby will fall apart.
The following picture demonstrates a snack section in my kitchen cabinet. The problem with this crowded space is that it’s not
properly organized so some things become hard to reach like boxes under the main box or beside it. If there was a shelf you
wouldn’t have to take other things out other than the thing you need. The overall problem with this storage space is mainly
accessibility.

Another storage space that is being shared in my house is a coat closet shown in the picture. It’s working well because of the space
and if you need to store other things as well there is a small shelf at the bottom so you don;’t have to shove things below.

In my house there is this closet with three drawers and the top of the closet gets used as a mini table for other things anyone might
want to put on top. The storage space gets used by all five family members living in the house. The problem with this is that none
of the drawers have items which are designated for just one drawer; everything is everywhere and it becomes impossible to find
anything. Even when someone organizes it into designated sections each drawer is always still a mess as the storage lacks section
separators.

Write the specific problem for the users here….. (3 or 4 sentences/bullet points)
The specific problem is an unorganized storage space by the door for a family of five. The family consists of a mother (age: 40, height: 5,5)
father, ( age: 42, height: 6 foot) and their children two sisters and a brother. (One sister is 10 years old and another sister is 13) the brother is
six foot and has an age of 16. All five members use public transport so they all have MRT cards, most of the family members spend money on
things so they get lots of spare change as well. Because the family has kids who go to school they need to stay healthy so they take sanitizer
with them. In the end all of these things end up by the door in this small shelf next to the TV, everything is clustered in one small cubby but
the rest within two drawers below the cubby. Finally, the problem comes to be that no one can find what they need because everything is
everywhere especially when they are in a hurry right by the door. Furthermore, when they do find something it’s usually tangled up with a key
and it’s key chain or something else.
Take a photo of your current situation and insert it into this box. Include a caption for the photo.

⚙ Why?
Explain why the problem needs to be solved. Research on the internet what would the consequences be if we don’t solve this problem.

Write down what is the value of well organized shared spaces?

How does organization/disorganization affect or impact the users of shared spaces and the community around them? (1 or 2 paragraphs/bullet
points with full sentences)

Instead of concentrating on the clutter and the to-do list, a structured, tidy atmosphere enables you to focus on life and
how you are using your time. Decluttering helps lessen anxiety and lift despair. The main advantages of being
organized and working in a generally clutter-free environment are enhanced performance and higher levels of
productivity. And those lead to a stronger sensation of control, which is essential for managing stress, building
resilience, and maintaining general wellbeing.

Task A4 | Design brief

🔎 What you need to ❗Why you need to do this:

do:
You have to make a decision: what will you design and create, for whom, and why? You want to use your research to help you justify your decision.
Summarise what you learned (the important take-aways) from your research. This means when you explain WHY you can refer to your research.
Develop a design brief, which
presents the analysis of
relevant research.

⚙ How to do this:

Consider these points below:

● Write in full sentences or bullet points.

● Write with full words.
● Avoid using rubbish bin words: things, stuff, something, cool, nice, etc.
● Use images or photos to support your design brief

Intro: Briefly state again what is the problem and why is there a need for it to be solved?

State: Describe the product you will make using some of the research information you found in A2. Use research to explain why this is the best solution. (Don’t be so specific like what
colour it will be, or if it is a box, .but rather more like how your product will function).

Who: Describe your target audience. (who will be the users of this product, and how would they influence your decision? What do they like or dislike?))

Success: Are there any special requirements that the client(s) wants? Eg. My client has an injured shoulder and requires the product to be light and easily carried using only one hand.
Introduction and Summary of Research

My goal is to design and develop a solution that will address a problem that is now plaguing my household and causing arguments among all of the occupants.
A mother (40 years old, 5 feet, 5 inches tall), a father (42 years old, 6 feet tall), and their three children—two sisters and a brother—make up the family. The
brother is six feet tall and is sixteen years old (one sister is ten and the other sister is thirteen). An unstructured storage area beside the entryway is the problem.
The majority of the family members spend money on stuff, so they also receive a lot of spare change, and all five of the family members use public transportation
and have MRT cards. The family brings hand sanitizer with them because they have children who attend school and they need to stay healthy. The items are
eventually gathered in one little cubby next to the TV near the door, with the remaining items being stored in the two drawers that are located below the cubby.
Eventually, the issue arises because nobody can find anything because it is all over the place, especially when someone is in a hurry and right by the door. Last
but not least, if they do discover something, it is typically entangled with a key, a keychain, or something else. It is very important that we address this issue as
instead of concentrating on the clutter and the to-do list, a structured, tidy atmosphere enables you to focus on life and how you are using your time.
Decluttering helps lessen anxiety and lift despair. The main advantages of being organized and working in a generally clutter-free environment are enhanced
performance and higher levels of productivity. And those lead to a stronger sensation of control, which is essential for managing stress, building resilience, and
maintaining general wellbeing.

In our investigation we researched that in terms of the items that get used in the storage space, we figured out through a secondary source of interviewing
people that the MRT cards, Apartment cards and mini bottles of hand sanitizer are what gets used more than the other items present in the space. Furthermore,
through primary sources of research we investigated how many categories the items can be organized into a section for five mrt cards, five apartment cards, a
small section for spare change and a bigger space for bottles of hand sanitiser. On the other hand, I investigated the storage space and its surroundings. Through
a direct source of my measurement skills, I measured the space to be 35cm high, and 46cm deep. The space is a cubicle thus the measurements correspond to
each other having the same length of an opposite side. In the same category, I researched the surroundings to be 100% safe. Through a primary source of
observation I saw that in the surroundings, there is an electrical switch which may be hazardous. Furthermore, in the same category I researched that the storage
space is a long shelf almost reaching the top of a lowered surface top. It consists of a shelf at the top which no one really uses, a cubicle which has the by the
door items, two drawers below this for anything else and a small shelf below which consists of picture frames of the family and decoration pieces. All contained
into a shelf. It is all placed by the door outside the mini hallway which leads to the door. Lastly, the final category of research which I did categorizes into the
occupants of the storage space. Firstly, I researched that five people use the space. A mother (40 years old, 5 feet, 5 inches tall), a father (42 years old, 6 feet
tall), and their three children—two sisters and a brother—make up the family. The brother is six feet tall and is sixteen years old (one sister is ten and the other
sister is thirteen). Last but not least, the last bit in the category is which people use the space most. This comes to be the kids because they go to school on a
daily basis and visit the space for a few minutes every day to gather what they need whereas the mom is unemployed therefore doesn’t leave the house that
frequently and the dad works alternate days in the office and stays at home some days.

My product will be a practical, effective and useful design which will be separated into a few categories to hold all my by-the-door items namely: mrt cards,
apartment cards, sanitiser, and keys. In order to be effective, the product design will consist of a top area of hangers to hand the keys in separate holders so they
don’t get tangled together. There will be a small section for cards, a separate one for sanitisers and one last one for a few spare change coins. Some of the
sections will have a door or some kind of widget to it to look more aesthetic. Finally, the overall piece will look nice and clean for extra points in my family.
A mother (40 years old, 5 feet, 5 inches tall), a father (42 years old, 6 feet tall), and their three children—two sisters (one 13 (grade 8) one 10 (grade 5) and a
brother (grade 11 age: 16) —make up the family who use the space which is currently disorganized. The children use the space most often because they go to
school every weekday and collect items which are needed outside from the space. Unlike the mom who is unemployed and leaves the house not too much and
the father who stays home some days to work.

My goal is to have a positive impact on everyone in my family. An organized, tidy environment that allows you to concentrate on life and how you are using your
time, rather than the mess and your to-do list. Organizing your space can improve your spirits and reduce worry. Performance and productivity are the key
benefits of being organized and working in an usually clutter-free environment. And they result in a greater sense of control, which is crucial for reducing stress,
fostering resilience, and preserving overall wellbeing.

A successful dream will be present when my product is made and there will be smiles on every face in my family. This is because even when someone is in a
rush they will be very well aware exactly where the thing they need is because there will be an aesthetic model placed on a shelf that will be easy to fly past
when you have a quick stop by it. A dream scenario would be when someone in my family gets up early on time and ready for work or school, they get ready and
as they’re leaving they’ll pick up a few things from my new product without starting to get furious when you suck at knots and can’t untangle something.
Another scenario would be when someone gets up late and rushes through they’re routine but won’t get too anxious when they’re picking up some last items
before they exit.
