1.1 TASK:

You are required in a group of 4-5 people to examine Coca-Cola’s sustainability report (2022),
titled “refresh the world, make a difference”.1

1.2 EXPLANATION:

This work invites students to dive deep into the concept of sustainability as a source of strategic
competitive advantage. Coca-Cola’s sustainability report 2022 presents a very common trajectory
of sustainability drive amongst corporations. You are required to apply your knowledge acquired
in class and address the strategic issues and associate them to the present case.

This case study analysis is very much centered primarily on the concepts of eco-efficiency and
eco-effectiveness that were introduced in lectures. When approaching this sort of assignment,
students must be adequately armed with theoretical knowledge and being able to analyze, apply
and critically appraise the theories learned. In addition, students must pay vigilant attention to the
fine details and rhetorical expressions of the case, as well as statistics, data and information
provided throughout the presentation of the case. The Coca-cola sustainability report 2022 (the
report) presents a perfect opportunity to test students’ understanding of the connection between
sustainability and competitive advantage. This commentary provides a preliminary scaffolding for
students to elaborate on their works on their own. However, it is by no means this work is in any
way complete nor exhaustive. The commentary presents a set of relevant questions that students
should address when approaching this case analysis. The prompting questions are as follows:

1. What indications are there to evidence that Coke is leveraging on sustainability as a form of
competitive advantage or business strategy?

2. In what way does Coke intend to apply sustainability as part of their corporate strategy? Which
level does sustainability take in terms of coke’s corporate strategy?

3. What are the literatures, both prior and present, that were written on this aspect? What are the
critiques on this aspect?

4. In what way do think Coke’s assimilation of sustainability into strategy resembles an eco-
efficiency model? What are the characteristics of eco-efficiency strategic underpinning? Does

Coke fit into that category? Why or why not? How had Coke implemented the eco-efficiency
model in this case? What are the arguments against the theory of eco-efficiency? What were the
critiques? Does Coke fall squarely within the critiques?

5. What are the key differences between eco-efficiency and eco-effectiveness? What are the
literatures that highlighted the differences? Is eco-effectiveness ‘another’ breed of eco-efficiency
or are they an entirely different model?

6. To what extent do you think that Coke has implemented the notion of eco-effectiveness in their
business model? What evidence is there?
