INTERNATIONAL DAY OF
MATHEMATICS

Introduction
The International Day of Mathematics (IDM) is
a worldwide celebration led by the International
Mathematical Union with the support of numerous
international and regional organizations from all
over the world. It was proclaimed by UNESCO in
the 40th session of the General Conference, on
November 26, 2019. The first celebration was held
on March 14, 2020. To mark the IDM this year, the
University of Technology, Mauritius in collaboration
with the Rajiv Gandhi Science Centre is pleased to
launch a poster competition for Students of Grades
12/13 on the theme:
Play with Mathematics
Team Registration
Maximum of 2 submissions per school to be
endorsed by the Head of School
Each team should comprise 3 students (Grade 12/13)
under the supervision of one Supervising Educator.

Poster Details
Poster Themes
In line with the main theme “Playing with Maths”, this
year’s creative challenge is to add Mathematics to an
everyday thing or place. Some examples of poster content
are (but not limited to):
1. The golden ratio and humans
2. Fibonacci in nature
3. Animals and symmetry
Poster Format
The poster should be developed by using exclusively the
Word format and submissions include both Word and pdf
formats.
A poster is expected to showcase key information at first
sight.
The poster should amongst others, contain the following:
Heading: The title should be relevant to the content you
aim to put forward in your poster.
Contact Information: The participants and school name.
Contents: The poster should explicitly display the field of
application, the importance of the field of application and
the clear use of mathematical concepts and references.
Contents should be kept simple and not overworked
with details/information– “Note that minimizing details
eventually maximize information transmission”;
Writing: Posters should be typed in a clear font that can
be easily read. Font ‘Times New Roman’ must be used. The
heading should be of font size of at least 36 and the text/
sub- headings of font size 18-24.
Graphics: Use illustrations and photos of high quality,
if any, to optimize information transfer.
Poster size: The poster must be of A2 size and in
portrait orientation.
Submission Format and Deadline
Posters in Word and pdf formats should be submitted
to idm@utm.ac.mu
Deadline: 30th April 2024
Poster Exhibition and Award ceremony :
15th May 2024
Prizes
Winner: Cash Prize of Rs 10, 000 with
Shield and certificates
1st Runner up: Cash Prize of Rs 7,000 with
Shield and certificates
2nd Runner Up: Cash Prize of Rs 5,000
with Shield and certificates
All participating students will be awarded a
certificate of participation.
Important Dates
Deadline for registration: 29 March 2024
Submission of poster: 30 April 2024
Announcement of Winners &
Prize Giving Ceremony: 15 May 2024
