Biome characteristics :

Water contains very little or no salt. The

water is also moving and not stagnant, as
a pond’s would be.

Extremely important source of drinking

water.

Algae and plants are the primary

producers.
Running water can maintain a higher
oxygen concentration than standing
water, so more life can be sustained.
However, the movement of the liquid is a
challenge for many organisms.
Combined with still freshwater habitats,
this biome fosters over 100,000 species
of flora and fauna.

Main freshwater rivers are shown here; it would be

impossible to show them all.
Threats to the Biome / Organization That Aids It

● The creation of dams and water-diversion systems blocks

migration routes for fish and disrupts habitats.
● Water withdrawal for human use shrinks and degrades
habitats.
● Runoff from agricultural and urban areas hurts water
quality.
● Draining of wetlands for development depletes habitats. World Wildlife Foundation
