Safety Precautions

CAUTIONS AGAINST HIGH VOLTAGE

Radio and radar devices are operated by high voltages of anywhere from a few hundred volts up to many
hundreds of thousands of volts.
Observe the following precautions to prevent the risk of electric shock.
Avoid contact with the internal parts of these devices.
Only specialized service people should do any maintenance, inspections, or adjustments inside the devices.
Falling after receiving an electric shock may lead to extensive secondary injuries, so be sure you have a safe
place to stand when working.
In the event that someone receives an electric shock, immediately implement emergency procedures, such as
cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

If you must reach into a device, as in the case of an emergency, you must switch off the devices and ground a
terminal in order to discharge the capacitors. After making certain that all the electricity is discharged, only then
can you insert your hand into the device. Wearing dry cotton work gloves is another way to reduce risks. One
more necessary precaution is to not use both hands at the same time.
Although there is no danger with normal use, it is very dangerous if contact is made accidently with the internal
parts of these devices. There is a very high risk of death by high voltages of tens of thousands of volts. In some
cases, you could be fatally electrocuted by voltages of several hundred volts.

Precautions for rescuing victims from electrocution

If you find an electrocution victim, you must first switch off the machinery that caused the electrocution and
ground all circuits.
If you are unable to immediately cut off the circuit, do not directly touch the victim. Quickly use a non-conductive
material, such as a dry board or cloth, to move the victim away from the device.
If someone receives an electric shock, immediately implement emergency procedures, such as cardiopulmonary
resuscitation.

When a person is electrocuted, the current passes through their heart and may cause ventricular fibrillation or
cardiac arrest. Also, if the shock is mild, the victim's breathing may be restored by doing artificial respiration. An
electrocution victim becomes very pale, their pulse can be very weak or even stop, and they may lose
consciousness and become stiff.

Procedure for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) using AED

1. Check the scene for safety to prevent secondary disasters

a) Do not touch the injured or ill person in panic when an accident has occurred.
(Doing so may cause electric shock to the first-aiders.)
b) Do not panic and be sure to turn off the power. Then, gently move the injured
or ill person to a safe place away from the electrical circuit.

2. Check for responsiveness

Are you OK?
a) Tap the shoulder of the injured or ill and shout in the ear saying, "Are you
OK?"
b) If the person opens his/her eyes or there is some response or gesture,
determine it as "responding." But, if there is no response or gesture,
determine it as "not responding."

3. If responding
a) Give first-aid treatment.

Please call an
ambulance.
4. If not responding Please bring an

a) Ask for help loudly. Ask somebody to make an emergency call and bring an
AED.
• Somebody has collapsed. Please help.
• Please call an ambulance.
• Please bring an AED.
• If there is nobody to help, call an ambulance yourself.

5. Check for breathing

a) Look to see if the chest and abdomen are rising and falling.

b) If the injured or ill person is breathing, place him/her in the recovery position
and wait for the arrival of the emergency services.

iii
6. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) (Combination of chest compressions and rescue breaths)
a) Chest compressions
1) Position of chest compressions
• Position the heel of one hand in the center of the chest, approximately between the nipples, and place your
other hand on top of the one that is in position.

2) Perform chest compressions

• Perform uninterrupted chest compressions of 30
at the rate of about 100-120 times per minute. Compress

vertically above your hands.
• With each compression, depress the chest wall to
a depth of approximately 5 cm.

b) Combination of 30 chest compressions and 2 rescue breaths

1) If not trained, perform the chest compressions only.
2) If already trained and want to also perform rescue breaths, give two rescue breaths after every 30 chest
compressions.
3) To avoid infection risk, use the dedicated mouthpiece for rescue breathing.
4) Continuously perform the combination of 30 chest compressions and 2 rescue breaths without interruption.
5) If there are two or more first-aiders, alternate with each other approximately every two minutes (five cycles of
compressions and ventilations at a ratio of 30:2) without interruption.

7. When to stop cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
a) When the injured or ill person has been handed over to
the emergency services
b) When the injured or ill person has started moaning or
breathing normally, lay him/her on his/her side in a
recovery position and wait for the arrival of emergency
services.

8. Arrival and preparation of an AED

a) Place the AED at an easy-to-use position. If there are
multiple first-aiders, continue CPR until the AED becomes
ready.
b) Turn on the power to the AED unit. Depending on the
model of the AED, you may have to push the power on
button, or the AED automatically turns on when you open Turn on the power.
the cover.
c) Follow the voice prompts of the AED.

9. Attach the electrode pads to the injured or ill person's bare chest
a) Remove all clothing from the chest, abdomen, and arms.
b) Open the package of electrode pads, peel the pads off and securely place them on
the chest of the injured or ill person, with the adhesive side facing the chest. If the
pads are not securely attached to the chest, the AED may not function. Paste the
pads exactly at the positions indicated on the pads, If the chest is wet with water, wipe
dry with a dry towel and the like, and then paste the pads. If there is a pacemaker or
implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD), paste the pads at least 3cm away from
them. If a medical patch or plaster is present, peel it off and then paste the pads. If the
injured or ill person's chest hair is thick, paste the pads on the chest hair once, peel
them off to remove the chest hair, and then paste new pads.
c) Some AED models require to connect a connector by following voice prompts.
d) The electrode pads for small children should not be used for children over the age of
8 and for adults.

10. Electrocardiogram analysis

a) The AED automatically analyzes electrocardiograms.
Follow the voice prompts of the AED and ensure that nobody is touching the injured
or ill person while you are operating the AED.
b) On some AED models, you may need to push a button to analyze the heart rhythm.

v
11. Electric shock (defibrillation)
a) If the AED determines that electric shock is needed, the voice prompt saying, "Shock
is needed" is issued and charging starts automatically.
b) When charging is completed, the voice prompt saying, "Press the shock
button" is issued and the shock button flashes.
c) The first-aider must get away from the injured or ill person, make sure that
no one is touching him/her, and then press the shock button.
d) When electric shock is delivered, the body of the injured or ill person may Press the shock button.

jerk.

12. Resume cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)

a) Resume CPR by following the voice prompts of the AED.
• Perform uninterrupted chest compressions at the rate of
about 100-120 times per minute.
• With each compression, depress the chest wall to a depth of
approximately 5 cm.

13. Automatic electrocardiogram analysis

a) When 2 minutes have elapsed since you resumed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), the AED
automatically analyzes the electrocardiogram.
b) If you suspended CPR by following voice prompts and AED voice prompt informs you that shock is needed,
give electric shock again by following the voice prompts.
If AED voice prompt informs you that no shock is needed, immediately resume CPR.

14. When to stop CPR (Keep the electrode pads on)

a) When the injured or ill person has been handed over to the emergency services.
b) When the injured or ill person has started moaning or breathing normally, lay him/her on his/her side in a
recovery position and wait for the arrival of emergency services.

INSTALLATIONS

2. INSTALLATIONS

2.1 Installation Procedure

The following procedure is for installing the equipment.

① Selecting a location to install the equipment

Carefully discuss the following points with the ship's owner when selecting a location.

 Install the equipment in a well ventilated area that is not humid.

 Install the MF/HF controller (NCM-2150) and the data terminal (NDZ-227) on the bridge or
someplace near the ship's controls. (If two controllers are being installed, install one near the
ship's controls.)

 Refer to the "External dimensions and equipment overview" and consider the maintenance of the
equipment when selecting a location. When installing the radio rack or console (NCU-515A/
531A) hereinafter called the main unit, work space is needed for pulling out units.

 Ground the main unit, the antenna tuner (NFC-2250/2500), the MF/HF controller (NCM-2150),
and the data terminal (NDZ-227) to the ship. Especially ground the MF/HF antenna tuner by
soldering one side of a copper sheet to the ship as explained later.

 The MF/HF controller (NCM-2150) is provided with a 5 meters length cable, but it can be relayed
through the connection box (NQD-2250) and extended up to 70 meters (between the transceiver
and the controller). In this case, it is needed to use one power cable DPYC-2.5 per one MF/HF
controller between the main unit and the connection box.

 The Antenna tuner (NFC-2250/2500) can be relayed through the Junction box (NQD-2253) and
extended up to 100 meters.

 Install the equipment far enough away from the compass to protect the compass.

2-1
INSTALLATIONS

② Selecting a position for and installing the antenna

The antenna is a conductor that emits RF energy (radio waves) from the transmitter, and receives
signals from other stations. There are many types of antennas. The most common of which are the
vertical whip antenna (10 meters long) and the wire antenna (10 to 20 meters long). Follow the
recommendations below for both types.

 Install the antenna as far as possible from any structures, wires, or other antennas to reduce any
effect to tuning or radiation patterns.

 Use an insulator with sufficient pressure resistance, and do not paint or get sand on it.

 Once the antenna is installed it is a part of the radio equipment and grounding it is considered
very important.

 The antenna's efficiency is proportional to the area of the antenna's ground (RF ground), so large
metal ships result in efficient antennas. Therefore, for smaller non-metal boats, provide sufficient
ground area (normally 30 m 2 or more).

 Connect all antenna grounds to the GND terminal of the antenna tuner.

 Refer to "Examples of antenna installations" in this manual for methods to install antennas.

Examples, particularly for transmitting antennas, of suitable and unsuitable grounds are described
below. In figure (a), the transmitting antenna, antenna tuner, radio, controller, and the user are
included as part of the radiating objective. Not only does this reduce efficiency, it also creates the
risk of electrocuting the user. Figure (b) shows an ideal example, in which the radiating objective
includes the transmitting antenna and the antenna tuner only.

③ Cable layout
Refer to the interconnection diagrams in chapter 1, the external dimensions and equipment
overview in this chapter, and the following recommendations to install the cables.

 Keep the cables as short as possible.

Note) As mentioned above, the maximum allowable distances between the main unit and the
MF/HF controller (NCM-2150) and between the main unit and the antenna tuner
(NFC-2250/2500) are 70 meters and 100 meters, respectively.

 Be sure to use twisted pair cable for control cables to connect the main unit, connection box
(NQD-2250), and the MF/HF controller (NCM-2150).

 When cutting cables, allow enough slack to connect and disconnect them from the terminals and
move the equipment for maintenance.

 Install the cables as far as possible from the smokestack or things that are hot. Protect the
antenna cables with a heat shield if they might be exposed to hot gas from the smokestack.

 Keep the cables as far as possible from magnetic compasses. The minimum distance from a
magnetic compass is 2 meters for braided armor cables and 1 meter for other cables.

 Use TTYCS (twisted pair) cable wherever it is specified in the interconnection diagram, even
when replacing the radio equipment.

④ Equipment installation
Refer to the external dimensions and equipment overview in this chapter when installing the
equipment.

⑤ Wiring
Refer to the interconnection diagrams in chapter 1 and the external dimensions and equipment
overview in this chapter when wiring the equipment.
Note) After connecting the wires but before turning on the power, check cable connections, wires
to the terminals, and the connecting bar setting for the AC input voltage of the battery
charger (NBB-714/724).

Additionally, regarding initial settings and operation check, refer to the service manual.

Lead (sealed) MSE 26.8V

Further adjust charging voltage according to the following procedure:

① Turn ON the AC switch and the BATT breaker.

Note:
• If there is a time lag at turning ON the AC switch and the BATT breaker, an alarm may
sound. This is not a malfunction, it happens because the battery charger alarm function
detects that the AC input is abnormal or the BATT breaker is off.
• If the BATT breaker is turned on while the battery poles are reversed, an internal
protection circuit trips the BATT breaker.
• When the AC switch and the BATT breaker are turned OFF after running the equipment,
an alarm may sound. This is not a malfunction, it happens during discharging a residual
electric charge.

② During checking the battery voltage with a tester, turn the variable resistor at the filter reverse

2.2.4.6 Other functions (protection circuit)

 Charge warning function

When the AC switch is off (AC input abnormal) and the BATT breaker is on (AC FAIL
condition), or when the AC switch is on and the BATT breaker is off (CHG ALARM condition),
the AC FAIL/CHG ALARM LED lights and a buzzer sounds.
* Auto recovery when the AC switch is on and/or the BATT breaker is on.

 Over voltage detection function

When the BATT voltage is more than +32.2 ~ 37.0 V, the connection between the charging
circuit and the battery is automatically broken (The BATT breaker is tripped). Also, the CHG
ALARM LED lights, and a buzzer sounds.
* When the BATT voltage is less than +32V, it is recovered by turning the AC breaker off and
then on, and turning the BATT breaker on.

 Temperature monitoring function 1

When a high temperature of over 60 C is detected on the circuit, the FAN starts cooling.
* The FAN automatically turns off when the temperature decreases.

 Temperature monitoring function 2

ALARM LED lights, and a buzzer sounds.
* Auto recovery after temperature decreases.

 Low voltage detection function

When a drop in battery voltage (21.5 V or less) is detected, the BATT LOW VOLT LED lights,
and a buzzer sounds. When AC input is abnormal (during discharge) and the battery voltage
goes less than 19.5 V, the battery breaker is tripped in order to protect overcharge to the
battery. This does not operate for momentary voltage fluctuations from sudden currents when
starting the device due to 0.1 to 0.5 second hysteresis.
* Auto recovery when the battery voltage goes above 23.5 V during turning on the AC switch.

 Charge circuit
When the battery voltage is less than 16 V, current is reduced due to the fold-back type
drooping characteristic (Max. 10 A).

 AC input over voltage protection

When an AC input of over AC 135 V (100 V setting) or AC 270 V (220 V setting) is detected,
the equipment is protected with blown the FUSE.

 DC input over voltage protection

(1) RS-485 signal line terminator settings

The RS-485 lines are used for signals between the NTD-2250/2500 Transceiver and the NCM-2150
MF/HF controller, so terminators must be placed on the first and last units. If there is only one MF/HF
controller this setting is not necessary because the load is terminated (on) at the MF/HF controller at
the factory. However, if there are 2 MF/HF controllers connected, the terminator on the unit nearest the
transceiver must be turned off.

To set the terminator to on or off, after checking that the breakers on the power supply (NBD-2250/
2500) is turned off, remove the back cover (shaded area in diagram) and short the TB101 jumper pin
on the CMV-3775 AF CONT UNIT appropriately as below.
