In the advanced science and technology translation module, we have access to Trados software

which is software supporting for translation. Each student will have to manually install this software
as a learning tool on a laptop. In the last 2 sessions, we practice to download and install Trados
software successfully. Besides that, I will learn some functions of this software in translation.

I search google with the key pharse “How to install Trados” and finds a thounsand of results. First, I
access to Trados.com to download but I can’t. After that, I read some papers to find the easiest way
to install, but they’re really complicated. After more than 20 minutes, my teacher sent a introductive
file to us. Then I read the steps how to install successfully. I click to a link and download Trados to my
laptop.

Then I pressed unzip the software, but the most important thing here is the password to unzip.
I continued to read the intructions and access a crack website to take the password. However, I can’t
see any numbers here, then I keep looking at some other websites but still there is none, at this time
I am really holpless. After some minutes, Somehow my friend miraculously found a website
containing a password.

In the next step, I type the password and finish the installing of Trados. I open the software and
begin to explore how to use. Firstly, I search google how to use Trados and familiar with some terms
in Trados such as: AUTO-PROPAGATION, translation Memory – TM, termbase, segments, project. I
then learned how to create a translation by, first in the TRADOS home screen, clicking New Project
in the left-hand corner. Next name the project, select Source Language and Target Languages (you
can choose more than 1 translation language). In the Project Files section (lower left corner), add
the file to be translated. -> Next. Then Create Translation Memory(TM) in Step 3: Translation
Resources for the translation. Click Create Translation Memory -> Name TM (TM name usually
coincides with Project name: TM_project). Create Termbase-TB. You also need to name TB and
select the source and target languages. Finally, I proceeded to type my translation into the right
column, once translated later I pressed Ctr-S to save my translated text as a file.
In short, installing Trados is not difficult, but it is important to know what the password is to extract
the software. It took me about 40 minutes to install it. However, when I get stuck, I usually discuss it
with my friend to figure out how to install it. In general, installation is just the first step, and the more
important and difficult steps are to learn its functions, and how it supports your translation work. I
think it will take a long time for me to get used to the functions in the software such as auto-
translation, suggesting saved terms, ... However, I believe it is not difficult because this is the
software that makes my translation more consistent and complete.
