of Tourism
Geography, Culture and Tourism
Introduction to
geography
The science which includes the word and its inhabitants.

In other words, it is a description of the earth, or a portion

of the earth, including its structure, features, products,
political divisions, and the people by whom it is inhabited.
Tourism Geography
It is the study of travel and tourism, as an industry and as a
social and cultural activity. Tourism geography covers a wide
range of interest including the environmental aspects of
tourism. the sociology of tourism and locations of tourism
(destinations).

Tourism Geography is that branch of science which deals with

the study of travel and its impact on destinations.
The geography of tourism is dominated by a number
of several key themes, which relate to location, place
and space, human and cultural characteristics, and
the movement of people or mobility. The geography of
tourism is also concerned with the flows of tourism
from generating countries to destinations.

These can be heavily influenced by economic and

political factors, with the flows of tourism traditionally
being from western developed countries to less
developed countries.
Geography
Geography may be defined as the study of the structure and
interaction of two major systems :
1. The ecological and Social system
2. The spatial system

Tourism
The activities of a person traveling outside his or her usual
environmental for less than a specified of time and whose main
purpose of travel is other than exercise of an activity renumerated
from the placevisited (WTO).
Relationship Between Geography and Tourism
How Characteristics of the Tourism
System Relate to Geography:
Rural Tourism - Focused on country side
Urban Tourism - Focused on town and cities
Spa Tourism - Travel for health and wellness
Eco Tourism - Based on nature
Sport Tourism - Focused on spectators travelling to sports
events
Heritage Tourism - As example; world heritage cities
Geography of Resources
For Tourism
With a growing demand for tourism focused on a resource base.

Different types of tourism will have distinctive requirements for

growth and certain sites. regions or countries will be more favorable
for development than others,

we can examine tourism resources on 3 scales,

Global
National
Local
Characteristics of Tourism Resources
Tourism resources have three main characteristics,
Tangible Features
Most tourism resources are not used exclusively
by tourist
Tourism resources are perishable
Tourism Resources at Global Scale
Physical Features
The land surface of the earth is composed of a variety of
landforms which can broadly group into four categories

Mountains
More gently sloping hill land
Elevated plateaus
Low land plains

Cultural Features
A country’s resources in the arts, culture and entertainment so-called
creative industries are at least important as its physical resources and
sports facilities in attracting tourist.
Relationship Between Climate
and Tourism
People in tourist activities directly contact with the atmosphere,
and tourist activities are influenced by climate. Pleasant climate
conditions may attract tourists and urge tourist industry making
progress; but unpleasant climate conditions can block the
development of tourist industry. Climate, as a natural element
takes part i building tourist landscape directly and indirectly.
How Climate Change Impact To
Tourism
Climate change have a significant impact on global tourism. Climate
defines the length and quality of the tourism season, and it plays a major
role in the choice of destination and tourist spending.
Climate change is a major factor influencing the geography of
consumption of tourism. The area most affected by the 2004 Asian
Tsunami have taken some time to recover from the blow to their tourism
trade.
