CHAPTER #1 EXPLORING THE RICH HISTORY OF THE HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY


Objective:
Students will be able to understand the foundation and history of the hospitality industry,
identify and describe characteristics of various historical periods, define hospitality and its
characteristics, identify factors influencing the hospitality industry, and chronicle developments
in the industry from its beginnings to the present.
Assessment:
Students will create a timeline showcasing key historical events in the hospitality industry
and provide detailed descriptions of each event, demonstrating an understanding of the
industry's evolution over time.

Opening:
To begin the lesson, students will participate in a group discussion about memorable
hospitality experiences they have had and what they believe defines excellent hospitality. This
will serve as a hook to engage students in thinking about the importance of the hospitality
industry.
Introduction to New Material:
The key points will be introduced through a multimedia presentation showcasing visuals
of different historical periods in hospitality, interactive quizzes to gauge understanding, and
group discussions to address common misconceptions such as hospitality being solely related
to hotels and restaurants.
Guided Practice:
During guided practice, students will work in pairs to analyze case studies of successful
hospitality businesses from different time periods, discussing the factors that contributed to their
