1. Name and Topic of the Speaker: Ar. John Juta – Role of Technology in Architecture
2. What is your impression on the Speaker with regards to his specialization? 30
words
I think that the speaker is knowledgeable about his specialization with varying
experiences with the different technologies in the field of architecture. Additionally,
I think that the speaker is well spoken and got his point across clearly during the
talk about the importance of technology in Architecture.
3. What is your opinion about AI in Architecture? Will this be a threat to the practice
of Architecture? 30 words
Like other emerging technologies in the past, AI could be seen as another potential
tool for architects; making mundane tasks much easier allowing for a more efficient
design process. However, with its ability to generate designs on a whim, I think its
best to have a different approach in how we see and use AI – where instead of
using it to take over the creative process entirely, I think it is best used to take over
repetitive tasks, allowing architects to focus on the design entirely.
4. Are you keen on using these technologies in your practice in the future? Which of
these do you think will benefit your practice more (based on what your
intended/primary specialization in the future)? How? 40 words
a. BIM 3D: Visualizations Model (clash detection, laser scanning,
animations/walkthrough, images/renderings)
b. BIM 4D: Time Model (project phasing simulation, project schedules)
c. BIM 5D: Cost Model (cost planning, quantity extraction)
d. BIM 6D: Performance Model (energy analysis, lighting analysis, sun &
shadow studies, certifications)
e. BIM 7D: Maintenance Model (building management, facilities management,
asset management)
I think BIM 3D, 4D, and 5D will be the technologies I will be using in the future in
my practice, especially since BIM 3D is the one I am using the most currently (for
my plates), while BIM 4D and 5D will be extremely helpful in cost estimation of the
project, making it more accurate and convenient for me as well as BIM 7D.
This statement on the other hand I think, is the safest route for an architect’s
career. Since technology in architecture is always changing and evolving, I
think we, as architects, should embrace whatever trends that might emerge
in this field. While it is the safest route, I don’t think it will be as rewarding.
This statement, I think is the most rewarding, but might be the riskiest.
Becoming the wave would mean being the first in trends in the field of
architecture. It has its risks since it might fail if you invest too much in it while
it has a huge benefit should it become successful.
