El Emir Abdelkader mosque, in the city of Constantine, is the second largest mosque in Algeria after
Djamaa al-Jaza'ir in Algiers. It carries the name of Emir Abdel-Kader, the Algerian resistance leader to the
French occupation in the 19th century.
Designed by Mustafa Moussa, the Egyptian architect , the mosque was completed and inaugurated
in1994 .It is in fact an Islamic complex including the Emir Abdelkader Mosque and the Islamic University that
can accommodate to 19.000 worshippers .The complex consists of three parts: the main prayer hall, which is
dominated by a large dome, 20 metres in diameter; and the ancillary prayer hall, which is centered around a
courtyard; and the Islamic University. In addition to the main building, the mosque covers a total area of
13 hectares. It is adorned with two minarets, each 107 metres high, and fronted by a gigantic esplanade of
about 1 hectares
The Emir Abdel-Kader Mosque it is characterized by its Arab-Andalousian architecture making it a truly
rare masterpiece .
