FOREST PRODUCTS

The forests play an important role in protecting the environment and providing habitat
for a lot species. In addition to that, they also provide a variety of goods and
recreational spaces. Forests products pertain to the materials derived from forestry
which are being consumed or used for industrial purposes. The major forest products
include timber, fuelwood, papers, and charcoal. There are also minor products that
do not involve any use of wood which is a good approach to conserving forests and
promoting livelihood for local communities, especially the indigenous people. These
non-timber products come in various forms ranging from edible goods like nuts,
fruits, and honey to other merchandise such as bamboo, rattan, nito, and pandan
which can be used to make ornamentals, jewelries, storage boxes, purses, and
accessories.

Internal Criticisms:
Despite our natural wealth, we encounter challenges in managing these resources
sustainably. The excessive exploitation of our timber resources has resulted to
deforestation and a troubling loss of biodiversity. Illegal logging activities pose a
threat to our forests which further drain our forest resources and even the renewable
non timber products face risks if not managed properly due to the inadequacy of
forestry regulations.

External Criticism:

From a standpoint our forest products play a role in the global market especially
within the furniture and handicraft sectors. However our high rate of deforestation
and illegal logging practices have sparked criticism and alarm from organizations.
The sustainability of our non-timber exports, like rattan and bamboo, could also be
questioned if not managed properly.

Appreciation:

Despite these criticisms, I believe it’s important to acknowledge the steps our country
has taken towards sustainable forest management. Our government has initiated
reforestation programs and enforced stricter forestry laws to combat illegal logging.
Our rich biodiversity also holds potential for new medicinal plants and other non-
timber products. I am hopeful that with proper management, our forest resources can
continue to provide economic benefits while preserving our environment.
