MTB-MLE is an educational method that values using a child’s first language to teach
them in the early years of school. It acknowledges that language is not just about talking, but
also about culture and learning. By starting education in the mother tongue and gradually
transitioning to additional languages, MTB-MLE aims to provide learners with a strong
educational foundation while preserving their cultural heritage.
Language is a vital aspect of human culture and serves as a tool for expressing ideas,
thoughts, and emotions. It encompasses speech, symbols, written characters, gestures,
numerals, and non-verbal communication. According to the Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis,
language not only describes reality but also shapes the reality of a culture. This highlights the
significance of using mother tongue instruction as a means of improving educational quality.
UNESCO supports mother tongue instruction as it builds upon the knowledge and experience
of learners and teachers, promoting a deeper understanding and engagement in the learning
process.
MTB-MLE has several benefits. It reduces drop-out and repetition rates, as learners
are more motivated and engaged when taught in their mother tongue. It also promotes
inclusivity and equality by recognizing and valuing linguistic diversity. By involving parents
and the community, MTB-MLE creates a supportive learning environment and encourages
active participation in education. On the other hand, the absence of MTB-MLE can lead to
negative consequences such as a loss of confidence in students, difficulty in learning the
official school language, and a disconnection from heritage language and culture.
MTB-MLE is a valuable approach to education that recognizes the importance of
mother tongue instruction, bilingualism, and multilingualism. By starting education in the
mother tongue and gradually introducing additional languages, it provides learners with a
strong educational foundation while preserving their cultural heritage. The benefits of MTB-
MLE include reduced drop-out rates, increased school attendance, and active involvement of
parents and the community. It is crucial to implement MTB-MLE to ensure that students
develop a strong sense of identity, achieve educational success, and maintain their cultural
diversity.
