Land Resource

Movement of people to cities increased while movement to rural areas decreased

Movement to the city is mainly due to job opportunity. When people move to cities, they
usually don’t go back.
Rural areas compared to urban areas.
The city has more land available than in rural areas which is a good thing.
Urban Sprawl – movement of people from the inside of the city to the outside. This is a
positive feedback loop as more people moving put from the inner city causes more
infrastructure to be built outside of it which in turn creates more taxpayers.

Urban blight – a negative effect of urban sprawl where people leave the area of the
inner city.
Urban blight is more of a USA problem

Urban sprawl also brings with it pollution:

Light
Smog
Heat
Noise
Urban heat island – structures absorb heat which creates these urban heat islands.
Areas with lesser vegetation have higher temperature index.
To solve urban sprawl we could use smart growth:
Compact building design
Walkable neighborhoods
Growth boundaries
Sense of place
Outside of cities, we also try to preserve land.
The US has national parks, wilderness area, wildlife refuge that are protected for future
generations to enjoy.
National parks – used for recreation
Wildlife refuge – used to protect certain species
Wilderness area – has the strictest of constraints, the only way to get in are walking,
riding a horse or a canoe.
Protection of wetlands/forests have also been done.
When we put boundaries around these places, we can:
Mitigate it to avoid development of infrastructure in these areas
Restore them when they are damaged
And remediate them.
