Teacher: Alannie D.

Padriga
Level: Grade 3
Duration: 45 minutes
Subject: Science
Topic: Parts of a Volcano

Learning Intention: At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:
 Identify the different parts of a volcano.
 Appreciate the important benefits of volcanic activity.
 Able to make a volcano model.

I.ENGAGE.
The teacher will show a volcano model to the class.

What have you noticed about the model?

What happens when a volcano erupts?

What do you think is our topic for today?

EXPLORE

How do volcanoes form?

At this moment, the teacher will discuss the topic.

(Parts of a Volcano, important benefits of volcanic activity)
APPLICATION

(We Do Activity)

Students will make a model of a volcano and will fill vinegar in it. Later, they will put
baking soda inside the volcano.
(With teacher’s guidance)
Discuss and record their observations about the experiment.

So, what’s going on?

The cold red lava is the result of a chemical reaction between the
bicarbonate of soda and vinegar. Carbon dioxide gas is produced,
which is also present in real volcanoes.

As the carbon dioxide gas is produced, pressure builds up inside the

plastic bottle, until the gas bubbles (thanks to the washing up liquid)
erupt out of the ‘volcano’.

EVALUATE
Independent (You Do)
Students will work independently to check their understanding.
