lesson “Who Am I?”

Ask one representative from the class to guess the term that will be taped on his/her
forehead. Everyone in the class can only answer “yes” or “no.” C.1. The word is VOLCANO.

Three minutes will be given to the student representative in guessing the word.

Tell students that volcanoes are ruptures in the crust of our planet earth that allow hot
gases, molten lava and some rock fragments to erupt by opening and exposing the
magma inside.

 What is a volcano?
 Classification of volcanoes (inactive, active, dormant ) 2. Volcanoes are openings, or vents where
lava, tephra (small rocks), and steam
Tell students that since they already know the classification of volcanoes; inactive, erupt onto the Earth's surface.
dormant and active. They will have a short activity which will focus on the active
volcanoes.

B. Establishing a At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to attain the following task: Learners read the objectives of the lesson.
purpose for the a. Identify what is volcanic eruption
lesson b. Demonstrate volcanic eruption through the use of materials available in the
locality
c. Enumerate precautionary measures before, during and after volcanic eruption
d. Reflect on the importance of knowing the precautionary measuress before,
during and after volcanic eruption

C. Presenting INTRODUCTORY ACTIVITY: “help me fix myself ” The learners come up with this picture.
examples/instances
of the new lesson Post the photos on the board and ask two student representatives to arrange the photos to
(ELICIT) form the photo of erupting volcanoes.

Picture 1 - Anak Krakatau Volcano (Indonesia)

The picture is all about erupting volcano.

Tell students that the formed photo is an example of an erupting volcanoes.

 Volcanic eruption – occurs when a magma is released from a volcano.

Ask the learners how do volcanoes erupt?

D.Discussing the new

concepts and Tell students that they will be watching a video about volcanic eruption. Remind them to
practicing new skills take note of the important details they have watched and that they are going to practice
(ENGAGE) their listening skills.
Subject Integration (Filipino)
MELC: Nabibigyang-puna ang napanood na video clip (F10PD-IIIa-74)

Show clips of an erupting volcanoes.

“The video is about volcanic eruption.”
Ask: What can you say about the video you watched? Yes Ma’am . (Not yet Ma’am )
Students will be asked if they have experienced or watched a news about volcanic
eruption.
“We need to study volcanic eruptions so
Ask: Why do we need to study volcanic eruptions? we will understand why there are such
phenomena and to raise awareness of
people living in safer conditions regarding
the daily hazards that volcano
neighbouring communities face.”

E. Discussing new The teacher will group the students, according to their classroom cleaners.
concepts and Learners will follow what is being
practicing new skills Activity 1: Make me erupt! instructed, and will go to their
(EXPLORE) Materials: corresponding group.
Volcano model
½ Tablespoon baking soda
¼ Cup vinegar
4-5 Drops of red food coloring

Tell students that they can perform the activity at home using products that are
available on their locality.

Note:
Make sure the volcano is in the clear tray before performing the eruption.

Procedure:
1. Add the baking soda to the lava tube.
2. Add the vinegar, food coloring and dish soap together thoroughly.
3. Add the liquid solution to the lava tube.
4. Stand back and watch the lava erupt.

Guide Questions:
1. What is volcanic eruption?
2. What happens during a volcanic eruption based on your observation on the
volcano model? Explain your answer.
Expected answer!
“Volcanic eruption occurs when a magma
is released from a volcano”.
“The bubbles increase the pressure inside
and, this pressure is great enough that it
escapes violently when released. This
escaping liquid rock becomes lava, which
solidifies as it travels”.

F. Developing
mastery (Leads to Let the learners present their outputs , by answering the following question,
Formative
Assessment) Guide Questions:
(EXPLAIN) 1. What is volcanic eruption?
2. What happens during a volcanic eruption based on your observation on the volcano
model? Explain your answer..

Present the following concepts to the students:

A. How do volcanoes erupt?

Magma inside the volcano has a high temperature. As the magma is continuously heated,
it goes up. As it rises gas bubbles are developed. The gas bubbles are trapped and expand
causing the molten material to swell also. Resulting in a gradual increase in pressure
within the volcano. When the pressure exceeds the strength of the overlying rock
fracturing occurs. The resulting breaks lead to a confining drop in pressure which in turn
causes enhance or even more gas bubbles to form. Magma is ejected out as lava.

G.Finding practical Deepen the discussion by tackling the things that a person should do before, during and Learners read the Dos and Donts before,
applications of after volcanic eruption. during, after a volcanic eruption.
concepts and skills in
daily living Tell students that volcanic eruptions are natural pheomena, they will always be part of
(ELABORATE) our lives; hence, it is beneficial to know the DOs and DONTs prior, during, and after
volcanic eruptions.

Present the following Dos and Donts before, during, and after a volcanic eruption as
sussgested by Rabago et al. (2014):
Before
 Prepare all necessary things such as foods, medicine, water, some blanket and
clothing, and secure important documents that you need to bring if it requires
you to evacuate. DO NOT hesitate to leave your houses – your lives are more
important your properties!
 Prepare other life-saving devices such as cell phones, flashlights, whistle, and
gas masks.
 Prioritize the safety of your children and elderly before other things.

During
If you are outdoors
 Seek shelter indoors and cover especially when there is a rockfall.
 If you can drive rather than walk, use your vehicle to evacuate. While driving
keep all the windows closed and be aware and alert of unusual hazards in the
road.
If you are indoors
 Close all widows, doors, and other house openings.
 Monitor alert levels via television or battery-operated radio transistors in case of
power loss.
 Cover your nose and mouth with masks to avoid breathing in ashes.
 Bring pets and livestock into closed shelter – their safety is also one of our
concerns.
 Stay inside your house unless authorities tell you to evacuate.

After
 Check the entire house, the walls, the roofs, and electric wirings – earthquakes
increased temperature and other volcanic – related activities might affect the
stability of the building.
 Clean house usings masks to avoid inhalation of ash and volcanic debris.
 Wait for further announcement before transporting your family back to your
house.

Ask: What do you think is the importance of DRR on one’s life?

“Disaster Risk Reduction is important so

we will know what and how to prepare
during disasters and natural phenomenon
Subject Integration (Disaster Risk Readiness and Reduction such as volcanic eruptions.
Recognize the importance of DRR on one’s life (DRR11/12-IIg-h-43)

H. Making Let the students answer what is the best thing to do on the following scenarios. Learner answers may vary.
