Malindang volcano is a stratovolcano
(composite) on the western margin of Iligan
Bay in north-central Mindanao Island, 20 km
NE of Tambulig, Philippines. It is part of the
Malindang National Park. The basaltic to
andesitic Malindang stratovolcano contains a
small summit caldera. There are no known
F. Developing historic eruptions, but legends tell of a large
mastery eruption in the past.
In 1991, a tectonic earthquake coincided
with rumblings from a thunderstorm on the
volcano and reports about volcanic activity
spread rapidly, triggering a false eruption
alarm and authorities started widespread
evacuations. No eruption occurred, but a
previously unknown geothermal area was
discovered.

Guide Questions:
 How will you classify Mount
Malindang?
 What are your bases?

concepts and
Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines is an
skills in daily
active volcano which has an elevation of 1,486
living
meters and was located in Zambales. It
erupted in 1991 which was one of the largest
record during the 20th century. It ejected
roughly ten billion tons onto the surrounding
landscape and millions of tons of sulfur dioxide
gas into the atmosphere. The evacuation
radius was increased to 40 kilometers.
However, the volcanic ash and rain from
Typhoon Yunya, which hit at the same time,
formed heavy muds that rained down on
densely populated areas. About 200 people
died from collapsed roofs.
QUESTIONS:
1) What kind of a volcano is the Mount
Pinatubo?
2) When did it erupt? What are the
recorded casualties?
3) Why do you think people keep on
living near the volcanoes? What
benefits can we get from volcanoes?
4) How do volcanic eruptions affect the
society?
