Installation instructions
Preparation
Check delivered components for any signs of transport damage.
Check that all parts have been received so that installation can be completed.
Check that access conditions and the required space around the machine are in order.
Check that the foundation on which the machine is to be located has sufficient load-
bearing capacity for the load in question.
In addition, the required SWL-marked lifting gear/crane for the task at hand must be
available.
Use the correct tools for installation in the event that they are not specified.

Remember necessary safety equipment such as safety helmets and footwear, gloves,
protective goggles and lifeline, if required, before commencing work (none of these items are
supplied as standard).
NB! Lifting gear must be certified to lift the load in question.
The weight of the machine is stated on the machine’s label.

Installation
Before installation: Check the conveying direction using the flow diagram.
The foundation on which the elevator is placed must be horizontal.
Position the elevator in accordance with the conveying direction (inlet/discharge).
The most expedient procedure when installing an elevator is to start with the location of the
base.
When the bottom is in place, it must be supported in all four corners and levelled such that it
is horizontal.
Then install the legs. The two legs that are placed directly on the elevator bottom are
secured by means of the two accompanying flat iron flanges (ø10 holes). The holes in the
leg flanges must be drilled prior to installation.
Fit the remaining legs. Always check that they are plumb.
Adjust the length of the upper elevator legs (see separate section).
Lift the elevator top into place (check that the discharge is correctly oriented).
Note that the two overlapping plates on the underside of the top must be fitted such that the
heads of the bucket bolts do not snag the edge.

Length adjustment of elevator legs EC 5, 6 & 8

The upper elevator legs will usually have to be adjusted in terms of length.
The distance A should be measured/calculated, and the legs cut to this length.
Press the adapter flange down over the leg, mark the positions for the holes and then drill
Ø10 holes.

A

Assemble as shown above.

Check that the flange (2) is flush and correctly angled against the leg (1) before tightening
the nuts.
When tightening, the hole in the leg will “collar” up such that the head of the screw will be
countersunk in the leg and will be flush with the inside of the leg.
The adapted leg sections are now ready to be inserted between the rest of the elevator legs
and the elevator top.

Elevator legs
Cimbria‘s elevator legs types EC are assembled with compression-moulded clamps that are
pushed onto the bent out flanges and each secured with 4 M6x20 bolts that also retain the
spacers between the elevator legs. The clamps can be driven into position by lightly tapping
the corners if necessary.
The elevator leg with inspection hatch is installed in the side in which the buckets move
upwards, and with the sight glass at eye level at an easily accessible position.
The inspection leg and leg sections that are bolted together must be sealed in order to
reduce any dust emission.

Elevator belt
The elevator belt is fitted as follows:
Remove the elevator top to enable access to the elevator boom (fig. 1).
Remove the plate at the elevator bottom (fig. 2).
Place a 1/2” - 1” rope over the elevator top’s drum, and let it hang down on each side with
one end in each leg section.
Attach the end of the rope that is visible at the bottom to the belt.
Feed the other end of the rope out of the inspection hatch (fig. 3) and pull the entire rope
through until the attached belt has been fed through the elevator.
Pull the end of the rope from the inspection hatch.
NB ! Make sure that the belt does not become twisted in the legs.
Note: There are two things that can be done to make the fitting of the belt easier: Firstly,
make sure that there is a person at the top of the elevator who can prevent the rope from
slipping off the elevator boom, and secondly it is recommended that a few buckets are fitted
onto the belt, as this prevents the belt from twisting.

Assembling the belt

The elevator belt is assembled by means of special belt assembly brackets.
The procedure for fitting the belt assembly brackets is as follows:
1. Both belt ends must be at the special inspection hatch.
2. Completely loosen the tensioning device at the elevator bottom, i.e. the bottom drum
must be at its highest position.
3. Tighten the elevator belt using a hoist. The required tension is shown in table 2.
4. Pull both belt ends out of the leg/inspection hatch and clamp them together with two
screw clamps as close to the leg as possible, fig. 6.
5. Cut off the ends of the belt approximately 100 mm from the screw clamps.
6. Mark out and drill the holes according to fig. 7 and table 1. Note that the line through the
holes must be perpendicular to the edge of the belt.
7. Fit the belt assembly brackets as shown in fig. 4 & 5. Remember the shim pad.
8. Adjust the belt assembly brackets such that they are parallel prior to tightening.
See the correct tension in table 1.
9. Fit the locking nuts and tighten.
10. Remove the screw clamps.
11. Tighten the belt by means of the tensioning spindles at the elevator bottom (table 2).
12. Attach the buckets to the belt.

Fitting the elevator buckets

Remember to use working gloves as the buckets have sharp edges!

In order to avoid problems with feeding the belt whilst fitting the elevator buckets, first fit
every tenth bucket using the special bucket bolts (see fig. 8) that match the size of the
bucket in question.
Then fit, for example, every fifth bucket and so on, thus ensuring uniform and balanced
positioning of the buckets. Remember to check whether the buckets are correctly oriented in
relation to the direction of discharge.
If the elevator is to be installed in a seed corn plant, remember to fit the special, enclosed
nylon disks between the bucket and the elevator belt (see fig. 9). The purpose of the disk is
to ensure that seeds are not able to get stuck between the bucket and the belt.
Rotate the belt and check that all the buckets are correctly secured and do not come into
contact with any part of the elevator
Remember to adjust the slide plate (see fig. 10.) towards the buckets: The spacing must be
approx. 6 - 10 mm. When starting up the elevator, please note that any abnormal sounds
may be caused by the slide plate, which should then be adjusted.

Fig. 8. Fig. 9.
6 - 10 mm

Fig. 10.

Finally, reassemble the dismantled components and drive

arrangement.
The bucket bolts must be tightened so that the head of the Fig. 11.
bolt is flush with the rear face of the elevator belt. The
elevator belt must not bulge around the bolt head (fig. 11).

Bracing the elevator

The elevator leg flanges are so precisely machined that the assembled elevator will be
completely straight without any further alignment being necessary. However, it is
recommended to check whether the elevator is vertical using a plumb line or spirit level.
When this has been done, the elevator can be braced laterally at a maximum distance of 6
metres between the supports. This is done best using angle bars or similar. Bolt the angle
bar to the flange on the elevator legs using M8 bolts (see fig. 12). The holes are not drilled
from the factory (welding is not recommended).
If the elevator passes through storey partitions, attachment here will usually be sufficient,
whereas in a tall elevator shaft, e.g. in connection with a silo, it will be necessary to install
special bracing iron.
In the event of elevator heights in excess of 30 metres the bracing should also contribute to
bearing the vertical load, or the elevator top can be supported so that the legs are relieved of
the load from the main shaft.
After alignment, attach the elevator bottom to the base by means of the four holes in the
bottom of the elevator.

Fitting the motor and backstop

The elevators are supplied with free shaft extension or with a motor and drive unit.

When installing the gear motors, the backstop must not be fitted until it has been
ascertained that the direction of rotation of the motor is correct. Check that the arm on the
backstop can move freely in the recess of the holder.

Fitting the hollow shaft gearbox with backstop

The hollow shaft gearbox must not be fixed to mounting brackets, as there must be sufficient
clearance to take up the hollow shaft gearbox’s twisting movements.

Clean the elevator’s shaft

extension and apply anti-
corrosive oil, after which
the hollow shaft gearbox
can be fitted in accordance
with the assembly drawing.
Before connecting the
electric motor to the mains
network, the correct
direction of rotation should
be found in order to avoid
damage to the backstop in
the hollow shaft gearbox.
Remove the fan cover on
the electric motor and
rotate the fan blade
manually. If the direction of
rotation is anticlockwise
(when looking at the fan
blades), the wires for the
phases L1, L2 and L3 must
be connected to terminals
U, V and W respectively. If
the direction of rotation is
clockwise as shown on the
drawing, 2 of the 3 phase
wires must be swapped
over.
The elevator can be supplied with different makes of gear.
Please refer to the end of the manual.

Elevator bottom
The elevator bottom is equipped as standard with an
inlet hopper that is suitable for CIMBRIA type Q grain
spouts. The hopper can be fitted on the front or back of
the elevator as required, although it is recommended
that it should be fitted on the front whenever possible
(where the buckets move upwards), as this results in
the lowest power consumption.
If material needs to be fed from both sides, an extra
inlet hopper can be fitted.
The belt can be tightened by a lever situated at the
elevator bottom. This lever pulls the elevator boom
downwards by means of two spindles.
As an optional extra, an electrical low-speed monitoring
device can be installed on the tension shaft which cuts
off the current to the motor if the bucket belt begins to
slip.

Belt misalignment detector*

*The elevator can be delivered with belt misalignment

detector.

Belt misalignment detector is used in cases where full

control is required of belt travel.
A built-in time-delay in the sensor ensures that small
variations in belt travel are not registered.

Operation
The bucket elevator is characterised by a high level of durability and reliability, as well as low
energy consumption in relation to performance when carrying out the vertical transport of
grain and granulates.

REMEMBER!!
Before starting the elevator following installation or maintenance work, always check that all
guards and plates are in place and securely fastened with bolts, nuts and screws, etc. All
covers must also be closed and locked.
The elevator is normally integrated into a pipe section that is built into a machine plant. In
such cases, the elevator is activated from a control panel in the control room.
The start-up of the elevator is carried out by starting the plant in reverse order, i.e. output
transport must be established first. If the elevator stops, this may be due to the output
transport having stopped or the spout from the elevator being blocked.
If the elevator is equipped with a Cimbria speed monitor, this device ensures that the
elevator stops before the belt, motor or gear unit become overloaded.
After the elevator has stopped, the fault must be found.
Before starting the elevator, ensure that the elevator is emptied using the inclined shutter at
the bottom such that the elevator legs are free of material. If it is not possible to localise the
fault, please contact the service engineer.

NB! Important.
Original spare parts must be used. The machine has undergone a thorough appraisal of its
safety with respect to machinery safety, explosion and fire, as a result of which a checklist
has been drawn up with regard to maintenance and cleaning.
If non-original spare parts are used, the prerequisite conditions for the checklist will not be
met, and the warranty will be void.

Maintenance
The elevator has undergone a thorough safety review with regard to machine safety,
explosion and fire. Use the checklist. Failure to comply with the maintenance, cleaning and
service intervals will result in the warranty being void - and Cimbria A/S no longer being able
to vouch for the integrity of the machine’s safety standards, etc.
Never clean or repair the machine while in operation.
When carrying out cleaning or repair work, the power supply to the elevator
must be cut off in such a manner that the elevator cannot be restarted
inadvertently. This is achieved best by means of a lockable emergency stop
switch.

Inlet and outlet hoppers

Leaking and defective inlet and outlet hoppers must be repaired or replaced.

Elevator belt and tensioning

If the edge of the belt shows signs of wear, the alignment of the elevator must be checked
using a plumb line. Check whether the elevator belt is correctly tensioned. If the belt needs
to be tightened, this can be done by tightening the two tension spindles at the bottom of the
elevator.
If the spindles reach their maximum position and further tightening of the belt is not possible,
the belt will have to be shortened by approximately twice the tensioning distance on the
spindles.

Elevator buckets
Any metallic noise indicates that one or more buckets are loose. Inspect the elevator and
replace any loose buckets immediately.
Check the alignment of the elevator. Replace any damaged buckets and tighten the bolts on
the buckets.

Elevator bottom
In order to ensure easy access for cleaning the elevator bottom, it is equipped with an
inclined shutter underneath the drum. The bottom of the elevator should be cleaned
whenever required. The elevator pit must also be kept clean and dry, since the fabric in the
belt cannot withstand moisture.

Capacity shutter
The capacity shutter should be regulated as and when required.

Elevator top
Worn wearing plates in the elevator housing and outlet must be replaced.

Slide plate
An adjustable slide plate is fitted at the outlet. While the elevator is being run in, this plate
should be fixed such that the distance to the passing buckets is as small as possible
(approx. 6 - 10 mm), thereby reducing the return line. The adjustment of the plate should be
checked.
Pay particular attention if the belt overlaps. In this case the 4 buckets that are used where
the belt is joined together may “hop” on each cycle, and may hit the slide plate at the outlet
as a result.

Backstop, speed monitor

The backstop devices, speed monitors and other accessories must be checked once a
week.

Gear motor arrangement

Check the gear motor arrangement for oil (please refer to the motor and gearbox supplier’s
instructions) and any defects. In addition, the unit should be retightened once every year.

Motors
Cimbria’s elevators are supplied with motors with bearings lubricated for life (40,000 service
hours). The bearings cannot be lubricated, but must be replaced if necessary.
Lubrication should take place in accordance with the gear unit’s lubrication table (supplied
with the gearbox).

Noise level

The noise emission of the elevator depends on its location and whether it is running at full
load or is empty.
The noise emission from the machine may exceed 85 dB (A). In this case, ear protection
must be worn by the person or persons operating the machine.
