HARD WORK AND NO MONEY
Ever year thousands of young people in Britain finish school and then take a year off before they start
work or go to University. Some young people go to another countries and work as volunteers. Volunteers give
their time to help people – for example, they work in schools or hospitals, or they help with conservation.
Pauline Jones, 18, lives in Cardiff, Wales. Next year she wants to go to University to study Spanish, but
now she is living in Belize. Pauline says, “I’m working with other people here to protect the coral reefs in the
sea near Belize. The reefs here are beautiful, but if the seawater is very polluted, the coral dies. I’m helping to
do research on the coral and the fish that live around the reefs. All over the world, coral reefs are dying. We
need to do something about the problem before it’s too late.
I’m staying with a family here and I help with the cooking and the cleaning. I don’t get any money, but
that’s OK. I love my work here, and I’m learning a lot about the people of Belize – and myself!. When I finish my
work, I want to stay here for another three months. I want to travel around Belize and Central America”.

EMBARRASING INCIDENTS
One day last summer, I was walking through the local park. It was a hot day and I was
eating an ice cream. As I was walking pass the boating lake, I saw my friends, Carol and Jim. They
were taking their dog for a walk. When we met, we stopped for a chat. While we were talking, the
dog suddenly jumped up and tried to get my ice cream. I pulled my hand away and unfortunately,
the ice cream came out of the cone. Now there was a bald man behind me. The poor man wasn’t
doing any harm. He was just sitting on a bench and reading a newspaper. Well, when I pulled my hand away the
ice cream flew through the air and it landed on the man’s head. I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry, but Carol
and Jim did. When I looked at them, they weren’t just laughing, they were in hysterics. However, I was terribly
embarrassed.
One afternoon, I went upstairs to have a bath. As I was getting into the bathroom, the telephone
rang in the hall; I was expecting an important call so I run down stairs. There was nobody else at
home so I didn’t get dressed again. However, I was standing in the hall with nothing on I heard
voices outside the front door. It was my teenage daughter and her friends but I couldn’t get back
upstairs in time. I put down the phone ran into the living room and I hid behind the curtains. Unfortunately, the
window cleaner was clearing the living room windows. When I suddenly appeared, the poor man fell off his
ladder. Fortunately, when my daughter and her friends heard the noise, they ran outside. When I looked out of
the window, they were helping the window cleaner. So I went upstairs and put on a dressing gown. Luckily, the
window cleaner wasn’t hurt, but it was all very embarrassing.

THE THINNEST HOUSE IN THE WORLD?
Imagine living in a house that’s only 122cm wide. That’s not even wide enough for a
double bed! But that didn’t worry Polish architect Jerzy Szczesny who recently
managed to build, what he claims to be, the narrowest house in the world. Szczesny
decided to design the two- story house as part of an art project headed by Etgar
Keret, a famous writer and filmmaker.
The ground floor has a toilet, a kitchen with a table and chairs, and a sofa. Upstairs,
there’s a small bed and another table. And if you’d like to take a shower, you can
also do that.
The house is already on the tourist map and many people coming to Warsaw want to
visit it. But they first need to get through a small hole to enter the building. So, if
you don’t mind being in narrow spaces, I hope to see you there next time you’re in
Warsaw.

RIO NEGRO ADVENTURE TOUR
I’m not really a risk-taker and I don’t like doing dangerous things, so when my brother
suggested going on an adventure tour while on holiday in Costa Rica, I wasn’t very excited.
We started the day on horseback, going from the hotel stables through the tropical dry
forest. I’m very frightened of horses and I actually couldn’t get on mine, so it was quite
embarrassing. I didn’t enjoy being on the horse and the ride was too long, but we saw some
streams and waterfalls along the way and the surroundings were just amazed. We were surprised by all the
wildlife, too. We saw a variety of birds, reptiles and mammals. After the 45-minute ride, we got to Victoria
Waterfall at the foot of Rio Negro, where our white water rafting adventure started. It was very frightening in
the beginning, but it turned out to be good fun. We ended our rafting adventure with a swim in natural volcanic
hot springs and that was amazing.
It turned out to be a very exciting day and the whole family had lots of fun. Would I do it again? Probably not – I
still don’t like taking risks.

LITTLE BOXES
In recent years, there have been many predictions about what our houses will be like in the future.
Some experts think we will all live in boxes; others think we may actually live on the moon or another planet!
Two things are clear. We will use power from the sun, wind or sea and computers will control everything in our
lives and especially in our homes.
Every house will have devices to change energy from natural sources into power, and we’ll build houses
that can use this power efficiently. Computers will open and close doors to allow people to come in and out and
they will make sure the house and the people in it are safe. They will switch on the lights when we go into
different rooms or switch on gadgets when we ask them to. They will know when the fridge is empty and order
food automatically. They will even tell us who has visited the house while we were out and at what times!
Rooms will be smaller than today but furniture like beds, tables and chairs will come out of the floors
and walls when we want to use them. Again, the computer will do this for us. Some experts predict that
computers will control the entire world in the future, so perhaps they might decide to shut us in our little boxes
forever! There’s a thought

LIFE IN THE PAST
When my grandmother was young, life for children was very different from today. My grandmother grew up on
a farm, and I think she had more freedom than children do now. But even in the cities, there were fewer cars,
and children could play outside a lot more than today. My grandmother and her brothers and sisters certainly
didn’t have to do as much schoolwork as children do nowadays, but they couldn’t play all day because they had
to help on the farm and in the home. My grandmother left home when she was fourteen and got a job working
as a servant in a big house. That was the end of her childhood. She lived far away and couldn’t visit her parents
very often. She said she missed them very much. Everybody in the house had to work long hours every day. But
on Sundays my grandmother didn’t have to go to work. She could spend the day doing whatever she wanted.
When my grandmother was seventeen she met my grandfather, got married and had children. I think life then
was hard, and childhood was short.
