LESSON 2: Composing Clear and Coherent Sentences Using Conjunctions
Conjunctions are words used to connect words, phrases, or clauses.
KINDS OF CONJUNCTIONS
1. Coordinating Conjunctions
 These are used in connecting two independent clauses and to show
similar ideas.
 The most common coordinating conjunctions are for, and, nor, but, or,
yet, and so. You can remember them by using the mnemonic device
FANBOYS.
Ex. The players ran around the court and threw some baskets afterwards.

a. and– to connect all the element in a series


Ex. Basketball, badminton, and swimming are still the most favored
sports of my friends.

b. but, yet- to show contrasting ideas (other conjunctions with the same
function are nevertheless, on the other hand, and on the contrary.
Ex. She wants to dance but her parents don’t want her to join.

c. or– to show a choice between ideas


Ex. The victim could file a case against him or ignore the incident totally.

2. Subordinating Conjunctions
 These connect clauses of unequal rank. These conjunctions join a
dependent clause to an independent clause.

3. Correlative Conjunctions
 These connect similar words or group of words. They work in pairs.
either…or neither…nor whether…or

b. This story is not only a movie material but also a contest piece.

Ticket for a Cause


The school fair is right around the corner, and tickets have just gone on sale. We
