Term: torque

Definition:
 Torque refers to the force that causes an
object to rotate around an axis. Torque
depends on three factors: the force applied,
the radius, and the angle of rotation. Torque
is a measure of the kinetic energy that is
applied to an object to make it spin.

Torque refers to the force that causes an object to
rotate around an axis. Torque depends on three
Definition factors: the force applied, the radius, and the angle
of rotation. Torque is a measure of the kinetic
energy that is applied to an object to make it spin.

Torque is measured using a simple formula: torque

= force x perpendicular distance. In this formula, the
Torque force is expressed in newtons (N) and the
Torque components perpendicular distance is measured in meters (m).
The torque result is expressed in newton-meters
(Nm) or joules (J).

In mechanical engineering, torque is of vital importance

in the design and operation of motors and machines.
Aplication in For example, in an internal combustion engine, the
mechanical torque generated by the expansion of the gases
engineering pushes the piston, allowing work generation and
systems rotation of the crankshaft. Knowledge of torque is
essential to optimize the performance and efficiency of
these devices.
