Speaking Test Guidelines GEP 2

1. Before the test:

○ Review the previous units in the


student book and any notes you
have from class

■ You should make notes to


practice, but notes are not
allow for the test!

○ Create and practice your


conversation with your classmate

2. Day of the test:

○ Show a photo ID, the teacher will


check.

○ You may have notes, but not use


for the test

○ Students will sign their name


upon receiving their score at the
end.

○ Students may be asked to switch


partners or do an extra test if there
are not enough partners

3. Test Format:

○ Part 1: Personal introduction (1


minute)

■ Students will introduce


themselves and show photo
ID

○ Part 2: Conversation (1:30 to 2


minutes; scoring - 60%)

■ Work in pairs, role-play


your conversation using one
of the following topics your
prepared before the test.

■ The conversation should


last from 1:30 to 2 minutes

○ Part 3: Discussion (scoring -


40%)

■ The teacher will ask each


student 1 to 2 questions
about their conversation.

■ This should last for 2 to 3


mintues

○ Part 4: Scoring

■ Students will receive their


score and sign their name
to say they have received
their score.

■ The teacher may give


some feedback in there is
extra time

4. Scoring & Marking:

■ A student’s score/mark will


be measured by these
factors.

○ Content

■ How well you understand


the topic and answer.

○ Delivery

■ How well you respond.

■ Such as speaking clearly,


speed, easy/not to
understand, pronunciation
(speaking), or intonation.

○ Language Use

■ How well you use grammar


and vocabulary in your
response. Did you make
major (big) or minor (small)
mistakes

○ Responses

■ Can you answer the


questions from students or
the teacher

○ Interaction

■ How well you can


communicate and talk with
your partner.

● Eye contact, speak


clearly, and intonation

Suggested Topics:

○ Choose one of the topics below


with your partner and create a
conversation.

○ Practice with your partner, use


the student book and notes to help
you.

■ You cannot use or have


your notes during the test.

○ 1 - You are asking your lecturer


for an extension for an
assignment/a project. Give some
reason(s) and make your promise.

○ 2 - You are asking your boss for a


week-long leave. Explain the
reason(s) and how you have
arranged your work when you are
away.

○ 3 - You are planning to move to a


new place and need help with the
move. Ask a friend of yours for
help.

○ 4 - You are shopping for a new


gadget (a smart phone, a laptop, an
iPod, etc.) in an electronic store.
Discuss the price and your
preferences with the shop
assistant.

○ 5 - You are planning to hold a


small party. Make a phone call to a
restaurant to order for food or
drinks. You can make some special
requests if you want.

○ 6 - You are having an online


conversation with your best friend
who is studying overseas. Ask
about his/her studies and daily
activities.

○ 7 - You are having trouble with


your computer as it is operating too
slowly. Call a friend of yours who is
good with technology for help.

○ 8 - You are going to have a three-


day vacation and you want to book
a hotel room on the phone. Ask the
hotel receptionist about the
available service and facilities.

○ 9 - You want to spend your


weekend away at the beach. Ask a
friend to join you and together plan
the trip.

○ 10 - You have difficulty in learning


and memorizing English
vocabulary. Consult a friend who is
good at English on how to deal with
your problem.
