The Farmer and the Bamboo Tree

by: Victor Toledo

Narrator: Long time ago in a farm, there was a beautiful

bamboo tree right in front of a farmer’s house. This bamboo
tree is so pretty that it became an attraction in their town. So
many people admired its natural beauty. The farmer who owns
this bamboo so loved it that he wanted to preserve and just let it
live his life. But one day out of desperation he had decided to
cut the bamboo tree. So, he talk to the bamboo tree and
explained that he has to make use of it and it’s necessary to cut.

Farmer: I loved you so much but even though it hurts I need to

do it.

Bamboo: I myself am surprised too, why I’m the only one

standing here. Others are long gone. I’ve seen you cut them and
used them to build houses, fences, fisherman’s tools and even
bed at one time. I know and I’m ready if you need me too.

Narrator: So, the farmer cut his beloved bamboo tree. After a
while, the farmer talked again with the bamboo tree.
3

Farmer: I need to remove your branches and leaves, too.

Narrator: The bamboo replied in agony.

Bamboo: Do you really need to do that? I’m already in pain

now. You have to break my branches and even remove my
leaves, too?

Narrator: After cutting and cleaning the bamboo, the farmer

asked again the bamboo to remove its head and split the body in
half.

Bamboo: I respect your decision. Please do what you think is

necessary.

Narrator: After the cutting and some more cleaning and

preparations, the farmer brought the bamboo to the highest part
of his farm. There he used the bamboo as an irrigation pipe to
bring water to the low lying portion of the farm unreachable by
water before. After several months, the water that flowed from
the bamboo pipe gave life and produced abundance to the farm
and the people of the town. Then, the bamboo realized his
purpose and it was so happy. It serves its life so that other may
live.

 The End –

Class, did you like the story? (The students will answer)

After you heard the story, what did you feel? I was inspired.

Why did you feel that way? I was inspired by the story because even a tree can sacrifice
itself for the sake of others, in order to make people live and
survive.
4

After those sacrifices, the bamboo realized its purpose to the life
of many people; to our life. Did you know that we get lots of
benefits from roots up to the branches of this tree? Can you give
one example? It is used as medicine.

What else? It is used as decoration and for building of houses.

Many bamboo instruments are made for those purposes while

some are used for entertainment and personal expressions, in
order to make people happy. What kind of product do we create
out of it so we can entertain people? We can create a musical instrument.

Yes. Bamboo tree is perfect for making a musical instrument.
