Calculate the minimum number of square tiles that can be used to cover the floor.
9. A business woman bought 300 oranges at Ksh. 10 for every twelve oranges. Twelve of them got bad but she
sold the remaining at Ksh.20 for every 18 oranges. Calculate the percentage profit
10. Three business people, Mutua, Kamau and Mwiti contributed a total of ksh.164,500 to start a retail business.
The ratio of contribution of Mutua to Kamau was 2 : 3, that of Kamau to Mwiti was 4 : 5. How much did
Mutua contribute?
11. Peter is paid a commission of 1.5% on goods worth over Ksh. 100 000. He is also paid a monthly salary
of Ksh. 11 000. In a certain month, he sold 350 handbags at Ksh 400 each.
a) Calculate Peters earning that month.
b) The following month, Peters monthly salary was increased by 10%, His total earnings that month was
Ksh. 17 380. Calculate:
i) The total amount of money received from the sales of handbags that month.
ii) The number of handbags sold that month.
12. In the year 2001 the price of a sofa set in a shop was Ksh. 12,000
a) Calculate the amount received from the sales of 240 sofa sets that year
b) In the year 2002 the price of each sofa set increased by 25% while the number of sets sold
decreased by 10%.
i) Calculate the percentage increase in the amount received from the sales
ii) If at the end of the year 2002, the price of each sofa set changed in the ratio 16:15.
Calculate the price of each sofa set in the year 2003.
c) The number of sofa sets sold in the year 2003 was p% less than the number sold in the year 2002.
Calculate the value of P given that the amounts received from the sales in the year were equal.
13. a) The ratio of Juma’s and Akinyi’s earnings was 5:3. Juma’s earnings rose to Ksh 8 400 after an increase of
12%. Calculate the percentage increase in Akinyi’s earnings given that the sum of their earnings was Ksh. 14

c) Juma and Akinyi contributed all the new earnings to buy maize at Ksh 1 175 per bag. The maize was then
sold at ksh 1 762.50 per bag. The two shared all the money from the sales of the maize in the ratio of their

he spent 80% of the money and changed the balance to South African Rand. Calculate, to the nearest
Rand, the amount he obtained
19. A saleslady earns a basic salary of Ksh. 8500. In addition she earns a commission of 12 % on sales made
above Ksh. 100000. In January she earned a total of Ksh. 68500. Calculate the value of goods she sold in
January.
20. Oketch sells his car to Jane and makes a profit of 20%. Jane sells the same to Issa at Ksh. 180000, making
a loss of 10%. Determine the price at which Oketch bought the car?
21. A cylindrical tunnel of diameter 14m and length 400m is to be excavated in a rock. Calculate:
a) The volume of the tunnel.
b) The weight (in tones) of rock excavated if 1m3 of the rock weighs 6000 kg.
c) The number of truck loads needed to carry away the rock if a truck carries 30 tonnes.
d) Determine the capacity of a cone whose base diameter is 14cm and vertical height 24 cm.
22. The sum of digits formed in a two digit number is 16. When the number is subtracted from the number
formed by reversing the digits, the difference is 18. Find the number
23. Mary has 21 coins whose total value is Ksh. 72. There are twice as many five shillings coins as there are ten
shilling coins. The rest are one shillings coins. Find the number of ten shillings coins that Mary has.
24. Moraa spends a total of sh. 970 on buying 3 text books and 5 pens. If had bought 2 textbooks and 8 pens she
would have saved sh. 90. Find the cost of one textbook.
25. A car park can accommodate cars and buses. On a particular day there were x buses and y cars in the
car park, giving a total of 500 vehicles. The parking area of a bus is 50 m2 and the parking area of a
car is 10 m2. On that day a total area of 8000 m2 was occupied by buses and cars.
a) Write down a pair of simultaneous equations, in their simplest form, to represent the above
information.
b) Solve the simultaneous equations to find the value of x and y.

c) There is a flat rate charge per day for packing. The flat rate for buses is 2 times that for cars. On
that day, an income of Ksh. 23 000 was earned by the company. Calculate the flat rate of the bus.
26. Kerubo bought 420 bananas at Ksh 20 for every 8 bananas. For every 70 bananas bought, she was given
one extra banana. She hired a cart for sh 50 to transport the bananas. During transportation 14 bananas got
spoilt and the remaining ones were sold.
a) Determine:
i) The total amount of money that Kerubo spent.
ii) The number of bananas sold.
b) Kerubo made a 60% profit after selling some of the bananas at Ksh 30 for every 5 and the rest at Ksh
10 for every 3. Calculate:
i) The number of bananas sold at Ksh 30 for every 5. (4 marks)
ii) The amount of money obtained from the bananas sold at Ksh 10 for every 3

and at a distance of 1050km.
a) Using the scale of 1cm for 100km, show the flight route.
b) If the pilot on its way back decides to fly directly from D to A;
i) By use of compass bearing find the direction of A from D
ii) Find the distance from D to A in kilometers.
iii) The plane flies at 500km/h. If it leaves D at 9.00a.m at what time did it arrive at A.
c) Using your diagram in (a) above,

37. Three warships P, Q and R leave port X at 9:00am, ship P sails at a steady speed on a bearing of 070⁰, 100km
from port X, while ship Q sails on a bearing of 320⁰, 80km from X. Ship R is on a bearing of 150⁰ from port X
and due south of ship P.
