Summary of Course Contents
The course provides students with both extensive and intensive knowledge and skills
through fifteen units corresponding to 15 issues frequently encountered in the process
of doing professional translation. Each unit begins with a theoretical lead-in which is
then accompanied by a variety of typical examples for illustration. The ensuing tasks
designed for English-Vietnamese-English translation are intended to help students
reinforce the theoretical issues they have been introduced to. The selected texts cover a
wide range of topics that are expected to familiarize students with real-life translation
assignments.

Course objectives

Translation 2 aims to provide students with fairly profound knowledge and skills
required in doing professional translation. Students are given opportunities to practice
dealing with frequently encountered issues in real life translation assignments, through
which they develop such skills as analyzing the text before translating, identifying the
most equivalent sentence structure, diversifying structures and expressions, coining
new words based on certain word-formation rules, assessing translation quality, etc.
This type of knowledge and skills will help students to respond effectively to multiple
scenarios and situations in the job market. The skills are arranged in ascending order
of difficulty while the units increase in terms of level of equivalence, from word level
all the way to sentence, paragraph and passage level. Translation 2 consists of a wide
range of tasks and exercises, designed to develop students’ high-order thinking skills
(HOTS) such as the ability to analyze, assess, synthesize and create (as defined in
Bloom taxonomy).

Upon the completion of the course, students are expected to achieve the following
learning outcomes:
1. In terms of knowledge
- Develop wide background knowledge across various topics (culture, environment,
education, health, history, economy, international relations, political systems, and so
on)
- Acquire a firm understanding of the terminology of the topics in question
- Have more and better knowledge of linguistic and translation theory issues like
textual equivalence, sentence-level equivalence, inversion, cleft sentence, conditionals,
among others.
2. In terms of skills
- Translate correctly and without loss of meaning relatively complex words, phrases,
sentences and paragraphs from the source language to the target language

- Edit source texts before translating. This means students learn how to deal with
sentences that are run-on, disproportionate (either too short or too long), complex and
ambiguous and polysemic, etc.
- Be able to assess the level of accuracy of the target texts vis-à-vis the source texts;
assess the level of accuracy of their own work and that of their classmates.
- Translate at a speed of 85-100 words within a space of 10 minutes various types of
language, be it press, report or officialese.
