ASSIGMENT 4: DEALING WITH CLASSROOM PROBLEMS

SUBJECT: ENGLISH

DISRUPTIVE BEHAVIOUR IN THE CLASSROOM

Students often disrupt the class when they are bored with the lesson, or there may have some other issues.
Some students may have a bad attitude and feel it’s okay to disrupt the class. Certain students engage in
yelling and purposeful misbehavior.

Solution
Disruptive behavior must be addressed immediately by the teacher. With a very strict but calm voice the
teacher should query the reason for the disruptive behaviors. Students must be able to speak freely and
honestly to the teacher with respect. The teacher needs to query the reason for this behavior if it is
boredom.
The teacher should try and make the lesson with more activities so that the student can be more involved.
The teacher must try making the students come up to the front of the class to participate in the lesson
either by volunteering or upon the teachers request. Maybe a play can be part of the lesson.
Classroom rules should be set for students with rude and disrespectful behaviorism. Students may not
obey the rules that you have set. You as a teacher can get input from students about the rules. If they give
you an input about the rules, they are more likely to comply with the rules. As the teacher you must
follow through with the rules. For example, if one of the students does not obey the rules that have been
set, they will go to the headmaster. That must be followed. If one of the students has a personal reason for
disrupting the class, then that student must be able to be comfortable enough to come to you and talk
about it. As a teacher, try your best to help the student. The student must know that they can always come
to you for assistance and be able to trust you.

STUDENTS THAT HAVE LOW CONFIDENCE/SELF-ESTEEM

Most students’ self-esteem and low confidence start from their home. It may have started from childhood
growing up in an environment with critical parents. Some students could have been abused emotionally,
sexually or physically. This can cause students to be anxious and depressed or act out in various ways.
This could lead to students not concentrating in class and therefore not doing well in school. It can also
bring their confidence down in participating in sports. Students like this will also not want to socialize
with other students and feel it best to be by themselves and isolate themselves from others.

Solution
A teacher must try their most to make sure that their students are most comfortable in the class. Each
student must be treated equally. The teacher can start the lesson with a motivational quote. Give each
student a chance to participate in class lessons by coming to the front of the class and speaking. Students
must be praised even if it’s the simplest thing that they did. Teachers can use stickers to show their work
well done. Give them a pat on the shoulder. The teacher can plan a lesson with a play, and students must
engage in talking to each other. Allow students to speak about their dreams and goals for the future. Give
students certain responsibilities in class. Always let them know what a good job they are doing. Always
make sure that your students are comfortable enough to talk to you about anything.

STUDENTS NOT DOING THEIR HOMEWORK

Students often don’t like doing homework. Some students have personal reasons, some are just lazy and
find it boring and some may have extra curricula activities and concentrate more on that.

Solution
The teacher needs to ensure that every student does their homework. It is time consuming to ask every
child and to check every student to make sure that the student’s homework is done. The teacher can
randomly ask students from the class to stand up or come to the front of the class and explain or write the
answers to the homework. If a student didn’t do the homework, a valid reason should be given. If not, the
student needs to explain the reason behind them not doing their homework. If it is:
1. Lack of understanding: The teacher can ask the student to stay in during the break or after
school and the teacher can help the student understand. The teacher can also form groups so if
one student doesn’t understand they can communicate with someone from the group and get help
to understand the homework.

2. Personal reasons: Some students have issues at home regarding parents that are not really
interested in their children’s work, so they pile them up with housework or parents arguing all the
time. Hence, the students cannot necessarily concentrate at home. The student must be able to
confide in the teacher so that the teacher can assist. The student can stay in class during the
breaks and complete their homework or after school with the assistance of the teacher. The
teacher can also speak to the parents if necessary.

3. Lack of interest from the student. Some students are just lazy to do their homework. In this
case the teacher needs to be stern and have set rules on the consequences of students not
completing their homework. The student can be taken to the office, to the headmaster. The teacher
can contact the parents of the student and have a meeting regarding this matter. The teacher can
try and motivate the student to do the homework. Let them know that you as a teacher are
available to help them. You can also reward them upon their completion of homework.
