Introduction
When adolescents struggle with addiction, it becomes crucial to focus on treating drug

abuse. This investigation explores the different approaches, therapies, and shared

experiences that shape the recovery journey for adolescents facing addiction.

Effective treatments are available for adolescents with substance use disorders, such as

behavioural family therapy, motivational enhancement therapy, and cognitive-

behavioural therapy (CBT). Medication management may also be used in drug rehab

facilities to treat adolescent drug use.

This School-Based Assessment on "Drug Abuse Treatment for Adolescent Addicts"

invites an insightful examination of resilience, therapy, and the pursuit of a drug-free

future for these individuals navigating the challenges of adolescence and substance

dependence.

~7~
Plan of investigation

As part of a student group studying drug abuse, I personally chose to focus on " Drug Abuse

Treatment for Adolescent Addicts" because I have a personal connection to someone facing

these challenges. My goal is to gain valuable insights and understand the significant impact it

has on individuals and communities.

Through this project, I aim to develop critical thinking, communication skills, empathy, and

ethical considerations. I will gather information by exploring articles, videos, and audios

available online. Our collective goal is to make a positive impact by understanding the real-

world implications of drug abuse and working towards its eradication.

Summary of the article for page 3-4:

Adolescents with substance use disorders have specific treatment needs due to their

developmental stage. Factors such as susceptibility to peer influence, increased adverse effects

from substances, and potential long-term cognitive consequences make their treatment unique.

Various treatment modalities have been used to reduce or treat substance use in adolescents.

These include assertive continuing care programs, behavioural or contingency management

programs, cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), family therapy, motivational enhancement

therapy (MET), pharmacological therapy, psychoeducational therapy (PET), group/mixed

counselling programs, and multi-service package programs.

Previous reviews have indicated that adolescent substance use treatment programs can be

effective, particularly those using family therapy techniques. A meta-analysis found that family

therapy programs were more effective compared to other treatments, and family therapy and

general counselling programs showed the largest changes in substance use over time. However,

these reviews are not up to date with the latest evidence, and they do not cover recent studies or

provide a comprehensive analysis of different treatment modalities' comparative effectiveness.

Understanding the most effective treatment approaches for adolescents with substance use

disorders is crucial for ensuring positive outcomes in their treatment.

REFLECTION ONE

Drug addiction is perceived as a condition involving compulsive drug use despite harmful

consequences. This School Based Assessment shaped my thinking by showing me that it's a

health issue that requires compassion and effective treatment.

Artifact 1, (U.S. Department of Justice) article was informative. The article informs researchers

about the unique treatment needs of adolescents with substance use disorders, available

treatment modalities, and the importance of up-to-date evidence for effective treatment

approaches.

Artifact 2, the video was informative. It aims to educate and raise awareness about adolescent

substance use, addiction, and treatment, fostering a better-informed and supportive community

for addressing the issue of substance abuse among adolescents.

Artifact 3 is a poem (audio) entitled “Harmony of Healing: A Journey from Shadows to Light"

by Olivea Beaton. It shaped my thinking by capturing the arduous yet transformative journey of

adolescents facing drug abuse.

REFLECTION TWO

My first artifact is an article by authors of (U.S. Department of Justice) highlights the risk

factors, and potential interventions for treating adolescent drug addicts. This piece was

informative, written in standard English and was easy to interpret as the vocabulary was simple

for the most part and a dictionary was used for unfamiliar words. For example, “modalities”.

My second artifact is a video, the language used was formal, there were uses of factual points

that created a greater understanding of the video. Rhetorical questions used made me reflect and

think about ways in which I can implement resourceful solutions that can start in the aid of

curbing this issue.

My last artifact is a poem by Olivea Beaton written in standard English, using a creative and

descriptive language style. The language is designed to evoke emotions, convey imagery, and

tell a story related to the theme of drug abuse treatment for adolescents.

REFLECTION THREE

With the completion of this SBA the researcher has gained more knowledge about the causes

and effects of adolescent addiction. The research has shed light on the complexities of drug

abuse treatment for adolescents, providing valuable insights into effective interventions and the

challenges associated with the demographic. The following key conclusion emerging from this

study is the importance of early intervention, individualized treatment approaches, integration of

family support, holistic treatment models, and community collaboration.

Working with my group members brought me great success in the completion of this school-

based assessment (SBA). As a group we help each other by working together and checking each

other’s work regularly.

This SBA helped me to improve my vocabulary as well as strengthen my researching,

reasoning, and comprehension skills. I am now equipped with relevant knowledge that will help

DRUG ABUSE TREATMENT FOR ADOLESCENT WHO ARE ADDICTS
TITLE: ENSLAVE BY DRUG
At a young age, I fall to slave to a masa that pays no wage.

My soul, suffers the whiplash of substance attack, lost in the fields of blank tracks.

My strength has depleted, for now I am weak from trying to escape its bondage.

I saw this coming from a far but the temptation was sweet I couldn’t retreat.

The damage is done but I strive to heal from the bruised addictive deeds.

You took all I had masa, I am empty, beaten, alone and incomplete.

I hope one day you’ll let me be free masa to gain back the life I once live.

Masa, I sense help is around the corner no longer will you keep me in your grips.

In the midst of trial and tribulations the hardship endured I will fight hard to survive.

Masa, you destroy my home and tear my family apart, my future seems lost.

~ 16 ~
I refuse to be beaten down and pushed around, “No more Masa,” “please no more”

I chose to be free; I will tread that road to recovery at any cost.

Group Report: The Impact of Drug Abuse on Adolescents and Society

In this report, we present the findings of our research on various aspects of drug abuse among

adolescents and its impact on both individuals and society. Our group of five students delved

into five different subtopics, namely drug abuse treatment for adolescent addicts, the impact of

teenage drug abuse on their families, how drugs contribute to crime, the effects of marijuana on

the adolescent brain, and educating youths to prevent drug use. By exploring these areas, we

aim to shed light on the multifaceted consequences of drug abuse among adolescents and

emphasize the importance of prevention and intervention strategies.

Drug Abuse Treatment for Adolescent Addicts: Our research on drug abuse treatment for

adolescent addicts revealed that a comprehensive approach is crucial for successful outcomes.

Effective treatment options include a combination of behavioral therapy, counseling, support

groups, and medication when necessary. It is important to address the underlying psychological,

social, and environmental factors contributing to addiction. Early intervention, family

involvement, and ongoing support are key components of successful treatment programs.

~ 17 ~
The Impact of Teenage Drug Abuse on Their Families: The impact of teenage drug abuse on

families is far-reaching and often devastating. Our research highlighted that families experience

emotional distress, strained relationships, financial burdens, and a breakdown in trust. Parents

may become overwhelmed and feel helpless. Siblings may feel neglected or burdened with

responsibilities. Family therapy and support groups play a crucial role in assisting families to

cope, heal, and rebuild healthy relationships.

How Drugs Contribute to Crime: Our investigation into the relationship between drugs and

crime revealed a strong correlation. Substance abuse, especially among adolescents, is closely

linked to an increased likelihood of engaging in criminal activities. Drugs can impair judgment,

increase aggression, and lead to risky behaviors. Substance abuse also fuels the black market

and drug-related offenses. Addressing drug abuse through prevention programs, rehabilitation,

and community support can contribute to a reduction in crime rates.

Effects of Marijuana on Adolescent Brain: Research on the effects of marijuana on the

adolescent brain highlighted several concerning findings. Marijuana used during adolescence

can negatively impact brain development, affecting memory, attention, and cognitive functions.

Prolonged use may increase the risk of mental health disorders and addiction. It is crucial to

educate adolescents about the potential long-term consequences of marijuana use and promote

evidence-based prevention strategies.

Educating Youths to Prevent Drug Use: Our research emphasized the significance of

comprehensive drug education programs for youth. Prevention strategies should focus on

providing accurate information, promoting healthy coping mechanisms, enhancing critical

thinking skills, and fostering resilience. Involving parents, schools, and communities in drug
~ 18 ~
prevention initiatives is vital for creating supportive environments that discourage drug use.

Peer-led programs, mentorship, and awareness campaigns can effectively empower youths to

make informed decisions and resist the temptation of drug abuse.

In conclusion, our group report has addressed the various subtopics surrounding drug abuse

among adolescents and its impact on individuals and society. Effective drug abuse treatment,

support for affected families, crime prevention measures, awareness of the effects of marijuana

on the adolescent brain, and comprehensive drug education programs are essential components

in combating this issue.

CONCLUSION
In conclusion, our research on drug abuse treatment for adolescent addicts and our collaborative

group work highlights the necessity of a comprehensive approach. Effective interventions

require a combination of therapy, counseling, and support, with early intervention and ongoing

family involvement being crucial. Working as a group has enriched our understanding and

allowed us to generate innovative ideas. By embracing a team-based approach and tailoring

treatment plans, we can increase the likelihood of successful rehabilitation and support

adolescents on their path to recovery.
