 To enable the nurse to handle or touch sterile
objects freely without contaminating them
 To protect hands especially when handling
anybody substance
 To reduce the chance that the nurse’s hands
will transmit microorganism from one clients
to another
 To reduce the likelihood of nurses
transmitting their own endogenous
microorganism to individuals receiving care
SURGICAL GLOVES
- These gloves should be used when
performing invasive ,medical or surgical
procedures
- Ex. Assisting in the operating room
EXAMINATION GLOVES
- Medical examination gloves provide
protection to the nurse when performing any
routine activities
- These gloves help to prevent contamination
between caregivers and patients
- These gloves are used during procedures that
do not require sterile conditions, for example
drawing blood for a blood test.
UTILITY GLOVES
- These gloves are used for processing
instruments equipment and other items; for
handling and disposing of contaminated
waste; and when cleaning contaminated
surfaces

- Manufactured using a milky fluid derived from
the rubber tree, Hevea brasiliensis
- These gloves provide the best protection
What is latex allergy?
- The protein rubber can cause an allergic
reaction in some people
Causes: direct contact inhalation of latex practices
Symptoms: itching, scratchy throat, difficulty
breathing, sneezing, hives or rash, skin redness, runny
nose
Overview: latex allergy is a reaction to certain proteins
found in natural rubber latex, a product made from
the rubber tree. If you have a latex allergy, your body
mistakes latex for a harmful substance
Prevention: stay away from… dish washing glove,
balloons, rubber toys, hot water bottles, baby bottle
nipples, some disposable diapers, rubber bands,
erasers, condoms, diaphragms
Methods of apply gloves
OPEN METHOD
- This method used most frequently outside the
operating room
- Usually done when performing procedure that
require the sterile techniques
CLOSED METHOD
- This method is commonly used by the nurse
along with the surgical gown in the sterile
environment e.g. operating room

Nitrile Gloves

- Manufactured using synthetic latex, contain

no latex proteins are three times more
- These gloves are preferred choice for staff
with latex allergy
