HVPS Troubleshooting for PowerSuite Systems
1 of 8

Purpose
The purpose of this update is to notify the Lumenis authorized service representatives about additional
troubleshooting procedures when encountering faults in the HVPS on the PowerSuite (High Power) system.

When an error occurs on the PowerSuite system, and the HVPS is suspected at fault, perform some or all of
the following checks:

Steps 1-2: Preliminary Checks for Input Signal to HVPS

1. Verify that F3 in the Ac Controller is functional.

2. Verify AC Controller PCB output signal (220 Vac & 27Vac) to the HVPS (see Figure 1 and 2).

NOTE: In general, it is recommended in the event of any HVPS failure, to replace the controller or simmer
PCBs; however, when a fault of a specific brick channel is suspected, do the following checks:

3. In the case of igniting (simmering), swap the white wires of the non-working and working channels
(see Figure 3).
In the case of flashing, swap both the white wires (as in Figure 3) and the black cathode wires of the
non-working and working channels (see Figure 4).

4. If the brick cannot be ignited (simmering), replace the flashlamp or the brick assembly.

5. After bypassing the line signal and you find that the problem is coming from the HVPS, turn off the
system and do the following:

6. Flashing Error: Open the power supply cover to access the DC injection PCB and check the single
fuse (see Figure 5). If the fuse is OK, replace the DC injection PCB, or replace the HVPS flat cable
(P/N SP-1131410).

7. Check the IGBT Driver:

See Figure 6: Place a DVM between the 2

points on the suspected channel (C to E
terminal). If it is not in spec (approximately
between 0.3-0,4V), replace the relevant IGBT
(P/N 4801-0424).

NOTE: When selecting the diode mode on

the DVM, make sure that the display is
reading voltage and not resistance.

Figure 6

8. Check the Simmer Fuses:

See Figure 7: Slide the simmer PCB from its

slot and check the fuses (x4); replace if
needed (P/N 5110-0323).

Figure 7
9. Remove the HVPS Controller from its slot and verify that none of the stand-up resistor leads are
touching other components. This can cause a fault.

10. Figure 8: Verify the low voltage fuses on the motherboard. Verify F3, F4, F5 (P/N 5110-0251) and
measure <1Ohm. Verify F6 (P/N 5110-0263) is about 20-25 Ohms. Replace if needed.

11. Figure 9: Verify the 120 Amp fuse (P/N 5110-0302). Replace if needed.

12. Check the Diode:

See Figure 10: Each Channel has

a diode; check between the diode
and GND of the suspected
channel. If it is not in spec
(between 0.3-0,4V), replace the
diode
(P/N 4802-0715).

NOTE: When selecting the diode

mode on the DVM, make sure
that the display is reading voltage
and not resistance.

13. Perform the following check after turning the system ON:

a. Turn on the system; the system goes

through the self-test.

b. While is self-test, observe the channel

LEDs (See Figure 11); if one of them is
not blinking green, or is illuminated red,
replace the IGBT driver PCB
(P/N 0636-170-01) of the relevant
channel.

NOTE: If after replacing the IGBT driver the

LED is still lit red, replace the IGBT.

Figure 11

14. Verify controller board voltages: attach the black lead of the DVM to TP19 on the controller board.
Set the DVM to measure DC volts.

 Verify TP10 is +5V.

 Verify TP11 is –15V.
 Verify TP12 is +15V.

If the signal is not within the above spec, or not existing, this indicates a faulty motherboard PCB;
in this case, replace the entire power supply.

Cap Balance Troubleshooting:

15. Figure 12: For Fault 505: Check if the “Cap Balance” LED on the controller PCB is red. This
indicates an imbalance of capacitors. If this is observed, replace the entire HVPS.

Figure 12: “Cap Balance” LED on Controller PCB

16. Figure 13: Check the capacitors: On the motherboard, check the capacitor voltage:
On J2 [A], TP22 more than 790V for both capacitors [B], subtract the result of TP19 = 1 channel
[C].

NOTE: If the value is within 8% between the channels, replace the HVPS controller PCB only.
