Agency Description
Introductory Statement
The agency I am working with is the Coastal Carolina Recreation Department, specifically
within intramural sports. This department deals with all things recreation at Coastal Carolina
including renting out equipment, and holding fitness classes. For intramural sports, there are
many sports offered including flag football, soccer, volleyball, and basketball.
The Williams Brice Center was built in 1971, inside this building was Kimbel Arena (Coastal
Carolina University Athletics, 2018). This is where our basketball and volleyball teams played
their games, it also housed intramural sports. In 2012, The HTC Center was opened as the new
home for our sports teams (Coastal Carolina University Athletics, 2018). The multipurpose
recreation and athletic field was completed in 2016 (Coastal Carolina University, 2023). This is
The recreation department's mission statement reads “The Department of University Recreation
encourages student engagement and success through participation in recreation to support the
development of healthy and responsible individuals.” (Coastal Carolina University, 2023). This
department works to provide equal recreation opportunities to students and faculty as well.
Services
This department offers several types of recreation opportunities such as intramural sports, fitness
classes, and facilities for recreational purposes (Coastal Carolina University, 2023). For
intramural sports, we have scheduled games, for soccer and flag football, there are games on
Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday’s throughout the season. Students are emailed about these
opportunities and they are shown on the Coastal Carolina website as well. Games are held at the
Clientele
The clients served by the recreation department are students and faculty alike. The demographics
include young college students as well as professors, coaches, and other faculty.
Funding
Coastal Carolina University Recreation is funded through the school which gets government
funding. Intramural funding is the same as the other recreational services provided by the
department. Major areas of expenditures would include maintaining facilities, and providing
equipment.
Problem Areas
Problem areas could include more students or faculty wanting to participate than we can
these issues we could create a schedule with more days for sports or extend seasons, prioritize
equipment maintenance, and continue to vocalize and improve our safety protocols.
Responsibilities
During a typical shift, after I arrive at the recreation fields and clock in, I along with any other
officials who are working that day set up the fields. How this is done will change depending on
what sport is going on that particular day. For soccer, we place the corner flags and move the
goals into position. For flag football, we place the yard markers on the field and put the pylons
on the corners of the end zone. Typically I work with up to 8 other officials depending on what
sport and how many fields we will be playing on, there is also usually club sports workers, the
graduate assistant, and sometimes the coordinator of intramural sports. I received training in both
flag football and soccer officiating. Previous coursework has prepared me to work as a team and
communicate with other officials, as well as the players. It has also shown me how to lead when
Opportunities
For intramural sports, we are always looking for more officials, and there are also opportunities
in club sports work as well. Responsibilities include setting up fields, cleaning up after games,
and officiating games. For me, I make $10 an hour, this number could change for different
positions. There are not many expenses besides gas if you drive to work, and maybe a pair of
shoes specifically for the job because the fields can be pretty messy from all of the running and
playing of sports. The only experience I have in this role is during the fall semester, but I can say
there will be different sports with different opportunities and challenges in the spring semester. It
would be helpful for other RSM 392 or 496 to speak with the Intramural Sports Coordinator,
