Who founded anesthesia?


• the founder of modern anesthesia is William T.G. Morton
• The first use of this drug for general anesthesia in humans was in 1842 by Drs’
Long and Clark. On 16 October 1846
• Dr William Morton gave the first public demonstration of ether
anesthesia in Boston.
What is anesthesia?

• Anesthesia or anaesthesia is a state of temporary loss of sensation or awareness


that is induced for medical or veterinary purposes

• Loss of sensation may include some or all symptoms such as:

• Analgesia
• Paralysis
• Amnesia
• Unconsciousness

• A person under the influence of anesthesia is referred to anesthetized

How does it work?

• Anesthesia works by blocking signals in the nervous system.


• The nervous system is made up of the brain, spinal cord, and nerves
• Messages from the body travel through the nerves and spinal cord to the brain
• Anesthesia blocks pain messages from getting to the brain
• Making the patient feel no sensation at all
Examples of anesthetics

• There are 4 types of anesthesia sometimes include pain in child birth!

• general anesthesia
• regional anesthesia
• sedation
• local anesthesia

Sensations when anesthetized

• The feeling of anesthesia depends on the type used. There are two main categories:
• General anesthesia: This medication causes complete unconsciousness, so you
won't feel any pain or remember the surgery. You might feel a bit groggy or
disoriented when you wake up.
• Local anesthesia: This medication numbs a specific part of your body. You'll be
awake and alert during the procedure, but you won't feel any pain in the numbed
area. You might feel some pressure or pulling.
Side effects of anesthetics

• feeling or being sick.
• dizziness and feeling faint.
• feeling cold or shivering.
• headaches.
• itchiness.
