ICU EQUIPMENT PULSE OXIMETER

ARTERIAL LINE • A pulse oximeter is a device that is usually placed on a

• a thin, flexible tube that is placed into an artery. It helps fingertip. It uses light beams to estimate the oxygen
your doctors and nurses check your blood pressure saturation of the blood and the pulse rate. Oxygen
and take blood samples. saturation gives information about the amount of
oxygen carried in the blood.

NASOGASTRIC TUBE
• a special tube that carries food and medicine to the
BEDSIDE MONITOR stomach through the nose. It can be used for all
• provides a continuous display of not only the feedings or for giving a person extra calories
patient's ECG, which includes heart rate (measured as
the number of QRS complexes) and rhythm, but also
the oxygen saturation (SpO2).

CENTRAL VENOUS CATHETER

• A central venous catheter, also known as a central line,
is a tube that doctors place in a large vein in the
neck, chest, groin, or arm to give fluids, blood, or
medications or to do medical tests quickly.

INTRAVENOUS LINE
• small tube placed into a vein and connected to a larger
tubing. Used for fluid, nourishment and
medications can be given through the larger
tubing, usually using special pumps

FOLEY CATHETER
• a common type of indwelling catheter. It has soft,
plastic or rubber tube that is inserted into the
bladder to drain the urine.

INDWELLING URINARY CATHETER
• A catheter which is inserted into the bladder, via the
urethra and remains in situ to drain urine

INTRACRANIAL PRESSURE MONITOR

• A probe inserted through the skull into the brain to
measure pressure; may also be used to drain fluid

SPHYGMOMANOMETER
• an instrument for measuring blood pressure,
typically consisting of an inflatable rubber cuff which is
applied to the arm and connected to a column of
mercury next to a graduated scale, enabling the
determination of systolic and diastolic blood pressure
by increasing and gradually releasing the pressure in
the cuff

COMPRESSION BOOTS
• Prevents blood clots from forming in the leg veins
by periodically squeezing the leg muscles
• Buti pa legs mo may yumayakap

INFUSION PUMP
• a medical device that delivers fluids, such as
nutrients and medications, into a patient's body in
controlled amounts.

ICU BED
• special beds used by patients in critical conditions. An
ICU bed is considered special because they assist
medical staff to react and provide treatment quicker in
an emergency.

DEFIBRILLATOR
• delivers a dose of electric current to the heart
• yan yung sparks na hanap mo
• heart monitor but with paddles

INTRA-AORTIC BALLOON PUMP

• mechanical device that helps the heart pump blood.
It is a long, thin tube called a catheter with a balloon
on the end.
TROLLEY • Increases myocardial oxygen perfusion and indirectly
• designed for transportation and storage of medical increases cardiac output through after load reduction
supplies, used in medical intensive care units and
surgical operating rooms

MEDICINE CART/CRASH CART

• set of trays/drawers/shelves on wheels used in
hospitals for transportation and dispensing of
emergency medication/equipment at site of
medical/surgical emergency for life support protocols
to potentially save someone’s life
• the “cooler” trolley

RESPIRATORY EQUIPMENT IN THE ICU PHARYNGEAL AIRWAYS
MECHANICAL VENTILATOR • prevent airway obstruction by keeping the tongue
• takes over the work of breathing when a person is not pulled forward and away from the posterior pharynx
able to breathe enough on their own • Nasopharyngeal airway – for patients who requires
• assists in breathing frequent nasotracheal suctioning; minimizes damage to
the nasal mucosa
• Oropharyngeal airways – inserted into the mouth
over the tongue; restricted to unconscious patients to
avoid gagging and regurgitation; maintains patent
airway and serves as a bite block for patients with oral
tubes

ENDOTRACHEAL TUBE
• In its simplest form, the endotracheal tube is a tube
constructed of polyvinyl chloride that is placed
between the vocal cords through the trachea. It serves
to provide oxygen and inhaled gases to the lungs
and protects the lungs from contamination, such as
gastric contents or blood.
• Murphy eye - ensures gas flow if the main port should
become obstructed
• Angle of bevel – minimizes mucosal trauma

LARYNGEAL MASK AIRWAY

• are supraglottic airway devices. They may be used as a
temporary method to maintain an open airway
during the administration of anesthesia or as an
immediate life-saving measure in a patient with a
difficult or failed airway.

TRACHEOSTOMY TUBE • Aerosol mask & tent – for patients with intact upper
• It involves making a surgical opening into the airways
trachea through the neck and inserting a tube through • T-tube – used for patients who are orally or nasally
which the person breathes intubated or have a tracheostomy
• Mist tents/O2 hoods – for infants and small children
• Mist tents – croup tents

NASAL CANNULA
• Low flow; most commonly used O2 delivery device
• Provide supp O2 to airway at a flow of 8L/min or less

BAG VALVE MASK

• sometimes referred to as an Ambu bag, is a handheld
tool that is used to deliver positive pressure
ventilation to any subject with insufficient or RESERVOIR CANNULA
ineffective breaths • Designed to conserve O2
• Nasal reservoir cannula – operates by storing
approx.. 20 ml of O2 in a small membrane reservoir
during exhalation
• Pendant reservoir system – helps overcome
aesthetic concerns

OXYGEN MASK
• provides a method to transfer breathing oxygen gas
from a storage tank to the lungs

DOMINGO, K. BSRT 3B | 5
RESERVOIR MASKS
• Most commonly used reservoir systems
• Simple mask – covers mouth and nose; body of mask
gathers and stores O2 between patient breaths
• Nonrebreathing mask – has a reservoir bag; prevents
rebreathing with one-way valves

EXTRACORPOREAL MEMBRANE OXYGENATION

• It pumps and oxygenates a patient's blood outside the
body, allowing the heart and lungs to rest.
• is used when all other medical options have been
exhausted for patients whose lungs can't provide
enough oxygen to their body or rid themselves of
carbon dioxide. It can also be used for patients whose
heart can't pump enough blood to the body and for
those waiting to either get a heart or lung transplant.
• Last resort

LARYNGOSCOPE
• a thin tube with a light, lens and a video camera that
helps providers look closely at your larynx.
• ROT: No.3 curved Macintosh or straight Miller
laryngoscope blade is commonly used to intubate
adults.

CPAP MACHINE
• uses a hose connected to a mask or nosepiece to
deliver constant and steady air pressure to help you
breathe while you sleep.
