I Regression Analysis
Air Evap.
1. The following are measurements of air velocity and evaporation Vel. Coeff
coefficient of burning fuel in an engine: 20 0.18
60 0.37
Fit a line to these data by the method of least squares
100 0.35
Use it to estimate the evaporation coeff. of fuel when the air velocity is 190
140 0.78
cm/sec. 180 0.56
220 0.75
260 1.18
300 1.36
340 1.17
380 1.65

2. Engineers fabricating a new transmission type electron multiplier on a sheet , the structure of 50
sheets’ height (y) and width (x) are recorded. The summary statistics

𝑛 = 50, 𝑥̅ = 88.34, 𝑦̅ = 305.58,

𝑆𝑥𝑥 = 7239.22, 𝑆𝑥𝑦 = 17840.1, 𝑆𝑦𝑦 = 66975.2

a. Find the least squares line for predicting the height from width

b. Find the least squares line for predicting width from height

c. Make a scatter plot and show both lines. Comment

3. In reference to Ex. 1

a) Construct a 95% confidence interval for the intercept regression coefficient(𝛼).

b) Test the null hypothesis the mean slope parameter is equal to 0 ( 𝛽 = 0) against the alternative
hypothesis 𝛽 ≠ 0 at the 0.05 level of significance.
c) Construct a 95% confidence interval for the evaporation coefficient when the air velocity is
190cm/sec.

4. Recorded data on the number of twists to break a certain kind of alloy bar and the percentages
of two alloying elements A and B present in the metal:
#of twists %A %B
The records are found in table Y x1 x2
Fit a least squares regression plane and use its equation 41 1 5

to estimate the number of twists required to break the 69 3 5
bars when 𝑥1 = 2.5, 𝑥2 = 12 65 4 5

50 2 10
58 3 10
57 4 10
31 1 15
36 2 15
44 3 15
57 4 15
19 1 20
31 2 20
33 3 20
43 4 20
5. Measurements of Heavy metals are recorded monthly in a treatment plane both input and output
amounts are recorded. Records found in table
Input 250 290 270 100 300 410 110 130 1100
Output 19 10 17 11 70 60 18 30 180

a. Make a scatter plot

b. Make a scatter plot after taking the natural logarithim of both variables
c. Calculate the correlation coefficient r for the data in both , in a and b
d. Comment on the appropriateness of r in each case

II. ANOVA
6. the internal bonding of three types of resins ED,MD and PF need to be compared. Five specimens
were prepared with each of the resins :
Resins Strength
ED 0.99 1.19 0.79 0.95 0.90
MD 1.11 1.53 1.37 1.24 1.42
PF 0.83 0.68 0.94 0.86 0.57
Perform the analysis of variance to test the 0.05 level of significance whether differences among the
sample means.
