Assessment overview The aim of this assessment is to assess your knowledge and
performance as would be required to carry out routine
maintenance in the capacity of a General Purpose Hand under the
direct supervision of the Master or Engineer of a commercial
vessel.

You are working on a 25m fishing charter vessel and are required to clean the vessel after
each charter.
Your duties include cleaning the exposed timber deck and steel hatches (that often show
rust streaks), the melamine lined wheelhouse, fish cleaning station and saloon carpet.
1. Your supervisor has told you there are workplace procedures in place for these
routine tasks. It will assist you to refer to the procedures for preparation including

to thoroughly clean the hull. The problem is that you cannot take the vessel out of the
water to clean it. You notice ‘Septone Aluminium Cleaner’ at the local boat store and read
the following information on it “Septone Aluminium Cleaner is a highly effective acid
cleaner designed primarily for the cleaning of new aluminium and stainless steel surfaces. It
can also be used for etching new aluminium surfaces prior to painting.”
